Mycorrhizal fungi and plant community structure, tropical ecology

Research interests
My research interests focus on how mycorrhizal associations shape tree diversity in both temperate and tropical forest ecosystems, and my current studies are based in Guyana and at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS). Specifically, I am interested in how the physiological and structural diffierences between arbuscular and ectomycorrhizae influence regional tree diversity. In Guyana, I am investigating mechanisms of monodominance in the ectomycorrhizal tree, Dicymbe corymbosa (Caesalpiniaceae), which dominates large areas of otherwise highly diverse rain forest. At UMBS, I am looking at how elevated CO2 and anthropogenic NO2 additions to the atmosphere influence mycorrhizal associations in both ecto- and arbuscular mycorrhizal monodominant tree species, and how these human-induced alterations may ultimately affect forest diversity through mycorrhizal-mediated responses.
