Research interests
My research focuses on the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases. I use a combination of theoretical modeling approaches and statistical data analyses to understand the processes that give rise to the dynamic and evolutionary patterns of pathogens.

More specifically, my interests fall into three main areas:

  • The regulation of infectious disease dynamics
  • The determinants of genetic and antigenic diversity patterns in pathogen populations
  • Pathogen adaptation to environmental change

My thesis focused on the dynamics and evolution of Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium that causes cholera. Since receiving my PhD in 2005, I have devoted most of my research time to understanding the dynamics and evolution of RNA viruses, most notably interpandemic influenza.
