Research interests
My major research interests are in population and community biology of clonal plants.  At the population level, I am trying to separate the importance of traits of individual plant growth vs. traits of architecture for explaining plant success in competition by using spatial model of clonal growth parameterized by real plants (wetland sedges in the genera Carex, Scirpus and Cladium).  At the community level, I am analyzing species interactions based on community spatial pattern both above- and below-ground (mountain grasslands). I am also collaborating on projects on the transient dynamics in clonal shrubs (Spartocytisus supranubius in the alpine zone of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Pinus mugo in the subalpine zone of the Krkonoše Mts., Czech Republic). A second important focus of my research is the population dynamics of hybridization between native and invasive species and comparative ecophysiology of parental species and their hybrids: Typha latifolia (native in North America), Typha angustifolia (invasive introduced from Europe) and their hybrid, Typha x glauca. Finally, I am also collaborating on studies of the population and evolutionary ecology of endemic plant species in Macronesia.

Academic background
I received my Ph.D degree in 2004 from Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. I am currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology of University of Michigan and at the Institute of Botany, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
