About Us

The Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies was founded in 2004 with the goal of creating a world-classforum for historical teaching and research. Thanks to a generous gift in 2007 from benefactors Kenneth and Frances Eisenberg, the institute has amplified and extended the research, teaching, and public engagement of the History Department’s faculty and graduate students for nearly two decades. Our accomplishments include:

  • Hosting hundreds of visiting scholars for our annual speakers series, thus apprising the U-M communityof the latest fruits of cutting-edge historical research and new approaches to doing history;
  • Rekindling a public-oriented lecture series bringing captivating speakers who connect cutting-edge historical scholarship to the interests of broad audiences;
  • Creating a venue for graduate students to learn how to engage audiences across disciplines at our annual interdisciplinary workshop series;
  • Convening innovative public history initiatives, making it possible for faculty and students to explore podcasting, digital exhibitions, and other scholarship that reaches beyond campus; and
  • Creating an intellectual community for more than 200 scholars from around the world who have been awarded institute fellowships.
