Trained as a historian of Modern Germany and Europe, Anne Berg currently serves as a lecturer and the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Michigan, where she previously completed her doctoral work. Building on her dissertation, her book, preliminarily entitled Urban Legend: Truth, Travesty and Film in Nazi Hamburg, illustrates how debates over film and public leisure were essential in the making and breaking of the Nazi city. In the still-ongoing process of reading her manuscript for publication, Anne fell for (or into) her next project: A (glocal) history of garbage.
Examining the manifestation of ideology in such presumably ‘neutral’ materials as ‘trash,’ Professor Berg understands garbage as a technology of power. Using Nazi Germany as a case study, she seeks to illustrate that garbage, in its material realities and its everyday representations, orders our backyards as much as our world.
