Ben Graham is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the University of Michigan. His dissertation will investigate changes in the perception, cultivation, and consumption of olives in Italy from roughly 600 to 1000CE. His project analyzes how the olive entered into the nutritional economics of this re-imagined landscape from Antiquity. Going beyond its alimentary role, he examines how the olive figured in the negotiation of identity.
