Joseph Viscomi is a Ph.D. candidate in the Doctoral Program in Anthropology and History. His dissertation examines historical consciousness and the dispersion of the Italian communities from Egypt from 1937 until the present. The research is based on two years of archival, oral-historical, and ethnographic fieldwork in Egypt and Italy. Joseph's M.A. thesis in Anthropology and Sociology at the American University in Cairo (Egypt) was published as The Farthest Place: Social Boundaries in an Egyptian Desert Community (AUC Press 2010).
Joseph will use the Eisenberg Institute fellowship to begin writing his dissertation while reading through materials he has accumulated since August 2011. He will devote the period of the fellowship to completing a thorough outline of the dissertation and a draft of three chapters.
