It is a great pleasure to serve as the Director of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. Since its inception in 2006, the Institute has enjoyed the visits of the most exciting and innovative scholars of our generation, who interact with faculty and graduate students in lecture presentations and workshops. As a historian of premodern Japan, I am both excited and challenged to steward the Institute’s wide-ranging programs, which have attained indisputable national renown. In 2012-13, our continuing theme, “Taking Place: History and Spatial Imaginations,” engages us again in an exploration of new expanses and fissures in history and historical studies, in and across different regions of the globe and time.
The Institute is blessed with tremendous support from the campus and outside community. In response to this support, in Fall 2012 we exercised our own “spatial imaginations” by reconfiguring our headquarters, located at the top of the grand slate stairway in Haven Hall. Also home to the Institute's 17 fellows, the space now offers visitors a cozier ambiance for conversation, often spiked by the irresistible aroma of espresso. Please visit us at 1521 Haven Hall. Of course, we very much look forward to seeing you at our lectures and workshops in 1014 Tisch.
