Roann joined the English Language Institute as a Lecturer II in 1998 after having taught English to international students for 25 years in the U.S. and abroad. With a master's degree in English sociolinguistics from SUNY Cortland, she began her teaching career as a bilingual (Spanish) teacher in Syracuse, New York. After receiving a doctorate in applied linguistics from the University of Southern California, Roann served for five years as assistant director of the ESL service courses at UCLA and then for five years as chair of the English as a foreign language unit at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel.
Roann specializes in teaching advanced academic writing and oral communication skills (particularly pronunciation). She coordinates English for Business Studies (EBS), an intensive summer program that prepares international students for their MBA. She also works with international graduate student instructors (GSIs), helping to acclimate them to their first teaching assignment, observing classes, and providing coaching during individual consultations. As a communications consultant, Roann works with engineers, lawyers, professors, and others on accent reduction, presentation skills, and professional/academic writing.
