ELI 434: Discussion and Oral Argumentation

Fall & Winter Semesters (1 credit)

Develop the interactive speaking skills needed to more effectively participate in seminar-style discussions. Learn language and culturally appropriate elements needed for:

  • Effective interactive communication skills, including how to actively listen
  • Asking questions of clarification or seeking information
  • Interrupting and holding the floor
  • Offering your viewpoint, and then being able to elaborate on your ideas

Practice using these communicative elements in a variety of ongoing activities including student-led discussions that are videotaped for further reflection and analysis.
