ELI 510: Academic Reading and Vocabulary Acquisition

In this course graduate students develop strategies to process texts in their discipline more quickly, efficiently, and accurately, while at the same time reading more analytically and critically. Participants also expand their vocabulary for both speaking and reading fluency, and, improve  pronunciation of key discipline-specific terms as well as core academic vocabulary. Course activities include:

  • Discussions
  • Use of reading strategies
  • Exploration of vocabulary websites and apps
  • Short presentations
  • Short written summaries and critiques
  • Creation of an annotated bibliography and/or literature review
