Lecture Comprehension

This course is designed for international students who need to improve their general listening ability, as well as their lecture comprehension and note-taking skills in order to interact in academic settings and successfully complete their academic work. Students will learn about the features of spoken English that make understanding it particularly challenging and they will be given ample opportunities to listen to and analyze samples of spoken English. Students will also learn about U.S. academic lecture culture as well as specific strategies to apply before, during and after lectures to improve comprehension. Some specific lecture strategies addressed are: using background information, predicting, listening for headings, recognizing patterns of organization, recognizing opinions and understanding the impact of a speaker's style on the listener. Students will have the opportunity to listen to lectures and lecture segments on DVD and on the Internet. Emphasis will be placed on the need for continual strategy development.
