English for Academic Purposes
The ELI offers a variety of courses in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for nonnative speakers of English enrolled at?and visiting?the University of Michigan. The courses are designed to enable students to enhance their linguistic and communicative skills in order to become effective, fully participating members of the academic community both during their time on campus and beyond.

In addition to the EAP courses, the ELI offers a number of special instructional programs. These include:

• Winter and Summer Workshops for graduate student instructors (GSIs)
   
• Three full-time intensive summer programs: English for Academic Purposes (EAP); English for Business Studies (EBS); and English for Legal Studies (ELS)
   
• Speaking Clinic
   
• Writing Clinics for graduate and undergraduate students
   
• Conversation Circles
   
• Workshops focused on topics that students have identified as being of special interest, such as Negotiating Misunderstandings; Interview Skills; and Idioms in Academic Speech.

Teacher Education
The ELI also offers an ESL endorsement program for prospective public school teachers and teacher education courses for students interested in migrant education, service learning, and teaching abroad.
