Teacher Education and Language Research

The ELI's initiative into teacher education also includes working with University of Michigan undergraduates in the Migrant Worker Program, providing a course for those students interested in teaching abroad and service learning. Those courses include:

ESL Endorsement Program

The ELI, in collaboration with the School of Education, offers an endorsement in English as a second language on a state of Michigan teaching certificate. Approval of the application was granted by the state of Michigan Education Department in February 2004. The endorsement program is particularly exciting for the ELI instructional division because it enables us to serve a wider community of ESL teachers, passing on our own intercultural approach to language teaching. The endorsement program is designed to equip teachers with the skills, knowledge, and experience to teach diverse multilingual K-12 student populations. Education for all children is premised on respect for children's diverse cultural backgrounds and modes of thinking and on the belief in the ability of each child to engage successfully in the classroom.

The endorsement program consists of a six-course sequence of 18 credits. The state of Michigan has recently passed new standards that will increase the credit requirement for an endorsement to 20 credits. Our course offerings will reflect the new requirement by December 2006.

For further information please contact Carolyn Madden, associate director for curriculum, or Benita Murrel, educational administrator.
