Migrant Worker Outreach and Education Program

The Migrant Worker and Outreach Education Program revolves around a service learning course that the English Language Institute (ELI) offers to students at the University of Michigan in the spring and summer terms on the sociocultural background of migrant farmworkers and how to teach ESL to them. Our students are selected based on their interest in working with migrant farmworkers, Spanish proficiency, and maturity as potential teachers. We work closely with community organizations and agencies on the Southeast Michigan Migrant Resource Council, with whom we are sharing our training and materials. Transportation to the camps has been funded by the University and the Michigan Campus Compact has funded our bilingual materials development.

The English Language Institute at the University of Michigan - The Migrant Farmworker Outreach Education is cosponsored by the Residential College and the LSA Summer Language Institute.
