ELI Testing and Training for Prospective GSIs
LSA ELI/CRLT Course: ELI 994
LSA GSIs typically teach in lower level undergraduate courses during their first or second year at UM.
To prepare graduate students for these duties, the College of LSA sponsors a training course for prospective GSIs who have been nominated by their departments.
Approved for GSI Position
Students who are fully approved for GSI duties without any English language requirements receive a copy of their GSI Oral English Test results from their department.
Students may be approved for some GSI duties and simultaneously be required to enroll in an ELI course (e.g., ELI 584 or another course appropriate to their needs).
Not Approved for GSI Position
Students not fully approved for instructional duties are notified to make an appointment with the ELI GSI training coordinator. At the meeting, students:
- Obtain a copy of their test report
- Review the results of their test
- Develop a plan for English language study which includes ELI GSI-related courses
After English language requirements have been completed, a student’s department schedules a retest for the student.
