Test Programs

The University of Michigan English Language Institute (ELI-UM) Testing and Certification Division has been developing English language tests for administration internationally and in the United States since the 1950s.

International Testing

Current international testing programs include three English as a second language tests of two types: admissions and certificate tests.

Admissions Tests
The Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) is a four-part test designed to measure proficiency in advanced-level language skills for admission to English-medium colleges and universities.

Certificate Tests
The Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE) is a multi-skill advanced-level test battery that provides successful examinees with an official certificate that can be used as evidence of English language proficiency for education and employment purposes in the examinee's home country. The Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) is a multi-skill intermediate-level test battery that provides successful examinees with an official certificate that can be used as evidence of English language competency.

Note: ELI-UM does not release Certificate Program test results directly to the candidates. ELI-UM reports results to the exam centers, who in turn report the results to the candidates. Candidates should contact their local exam center for ECPE and/or ECCE test results.

Testing at the University of Michigan
ELI-UM Testing and Certification also develops and administers English language evaluations for incoming University of Michigan students and prospective graduate instructors. These tests are used to determine general adequacy of English language skills for various academic purposes and to make recommendations about placement into ELI language classes.

The Academic English Evaluation (AEE), a five-part test that reflects the level of English required in an American university setting, is administered to new University of Michigan graduate and undergraduate students whose native language is not English. Included in this test are the Graduate Test of Academic Skills in English (GTASE), and the Undergraduate Academic Writing Assessment (UAWA). The International Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Test, a four-task performance test, has been developed for evaluating the spoken English of graduate students who may be asked to assume teaching duties in their departments.

Commercially Available Tests
Through ELI-UM's Test Publications, various proficiency and placement tests developed at ELI-UM are made commercially available for use by other institutions. These include the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MTELP), the English Placement Test (EPT), the Michigan English Language Institute College English Test-Grammar, Vocabulary, Cloze, Reading (MELICET-GCVR), and the Michigan English Language Institute College English Test-Listening (MELICET-L).

Special Accommodations
ELI-UM is committed to ensuring that every applicant be able to demonstrate his or her language ability under circumstances that are fair. Read more about ELI-UM's special accommodations for test takers.
