Academic English Evaluation

The Academic English Evaluation (AEE) is used to evaluate the English language skills of nonnative speakers of English entering UM and to assign them to appropriate EAP (English for Academic Purposes) classes. Most new students who do not have an undergraduate degree from an English-medium institution are required to take the AEE. Those students who are required to take the AEE as a condition of their admission have been notified in their admissions packet/letter by their admissions office. This exam produces separate scores for separate skills and is designed to fit the local EAP curriculum. The AEE is given at the beginning of each term, just before or during the registration period

The AEE contains...

  • a 35-minute listening test
  • a 30-minute academic, grammar, vocabulary and reading test
  • a 30-minute supplemental EAP test
  • a separate writing test for graduate students and for undergraduate students
  • a 15-minute speaking test

You will take the written sections of the AEE on one day. At other specially arranged times, you have a brief speaking test and then an individual counseling session where you will learn your test scores and be advised about EAP classes. On the basis of AEE scores, you may be required to take one or more ELI courses in areas such as writing, listening, pronunciation, etc.

AEE vs. the GSI Oral English Test
The AEE is not the same as the GSI Oral English Test. The GSI test, an oral performance test, evaluates the spoken English of prospective graduate student instructors. Academic departments arrange for their own students to take the GSI test; students do not make the arrangements themselves.
