Amy Devitt

Amy Devitt (Ph.D. Michigan) is Professor of English and Chancellors Club Teaching Professor at the University of Kansas, where she teaches courses in composition, rhetoric, and English language studies. She has received six teaching awards. She previously served as director of Kansas' writing program and as associate director of the writing-across-the-curriculum program. Her research specialties have included language standardization and genre theory, with her focus for the past twenty years on genre theory. Her publications include the books Writing Genres (Southern Illinois University Press, 2004, paperback reprint 2008), Scenes of Writing: Strategies for Composing with Genres (Longman, 2004, with Mary Jo Reiff and Anis Bawarshi), and Standardizing Written English: Diffusion in the Case of Scotland 1520-1659 (Cambridge University Press, 1989, paperback reprint 2006). Her articles have appeared in American Speech, College Composition and Communication, College English, and other journals and edited collections.
