Why are we collecting alumni profiles?

One of the questions asked most often by undergraduate students either pursuing a degree in English or considering doing so is, “What can I do with a Bachelor of Arts in English?” We know the career possibilities for English majors are as numerous as they are varied—a  concept perhaps best represented by the sheer breadth and diversity of the careers chosen by our alumni—and as such, we began assembling this website to address this question by way of example. Through offering a number of profiles of our alumni, working in a range of fields and at various stages of career development, we hope to show the value a degree in English has in achieving rewarding and successful careers.

What we are looking for

We are very much interested in having this section of the site be as diverse as possible, and believe your story would help us a great deal in achieving this goal. If you would be willing to share your story, we would ask that you write a short narrative addressing the following questions:

  • Why did you choose to pursue an English major?
  • Tell us about your career path.
  • What value has your English degree brought to your path and career?
  • How do you relate your English background to your current career?
  • What advice would you give to current English majors?

In addition to your narrative, please answer the following questions:

  • Name/year of graduation
  • Current Position
  • Field or Fields in which you have worked that relate to your English background
  • Other degrees or areas of study

Please feel free to address anything else you feel is pertinent to your story or would be useful to current/prospective English majors. Also, if possible, please include a link to picture (a headshot or image where you are easily recognizable is preferred) to post along with your story (if you need assistance in this area, please feel free to contact us at  For an idea of what others have submitted, take a look through the profiles we have collected here in this site.

Please note

In order for this section of the website to have the most relevance to our current and prospective Undergraduate English Majors, we are limiting responses to alumni who received an undergraduate degree in English from the University of Michigan. Also, all profiles will be subject to review before they will be posted on-line.

Thank you for your interest
