John Richetti is A.M. Rosenthal Professor (Emeritus) of English at the University of Pennsylvania. Among his most recent publications is The Life of Daniel Defoe: A Critical Biography (2005). He has edited The Cambridge Companion to Daniel Defoe (2008), and the paperback edition of his The Cambridge History of English Literature: 1660-1780 appeared in 2012. In 2011 he was awarded a Mellon Emeritus Fellowship for his current project, “Performance and Orality in Eighteenth-Century English Verse.”

Kathryn Shanley teaches in the Native American Studies Department at the University of Montana, Missoula, and works as the Special Assistant to the Provost for Native American and Indigenous Education. Her most recent publications include, “’An Event of Distance’: James Welch’s Place in Space and Time,” in Native American Renaissance: Literary Imagination and Achievement (2013) and “The Trick of Grieving Well and the Grief of Tricking Well: The Unspeakable Gerald Vizenor, in Gerald Vizenor: Texts and Contexts (2012). Dr. Shanley co-edits (with Ned Blackhawk) the Yale University Press Henry Roe Cloud, American Indians and Modernity book series. She served as the president of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association in 2011-2012. 

This event is sponsored by the Department of English Language and Literature, the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the Institute for the Humanities, Rackham Graduate School, and the Department of American Culture.
