POETRY WITHOUT MODERNITY, a workshop with Christopher Nealon (Johns Hopkins University)
Nealon will "focus this workshop on what happens if we try to read poetry from the last century or so without reference to the idea of "modernity" -- how far can we get, what can we learn, if we hold off on mobilizing the reading apparatus that the idea of "modernity" carries with it? Are there other ways to historicize poetry, and to appreciate its power, without reading it as "modern""? Participants will read and discuss a pre-circulated, forthcoming essay by Nealon, "The Prynne Reflex," on twentieth-century British poet JH Prynne.
A Poetry & Poetics event - pre-circulated paper available by request. Please contact jjhanson@umich.edu
