LangRhet Hot Topic -- Language on Trial: The Case of George Zimmerman

Join us for a LangRhet Hot Topic conversation with Anne Curzan about language ideology in the George Zimmerman case. In this open conversation, we will look specifically at Rachel Jeantel’s testimony, and how it was received by the media.

We will use two articles as jumping-off points for our discussion:

o   John McWhorter’s “Rachel Jeantel Explained, Linguistically,” Time Magazine, Online: http://ideas.time.com/2013/06/28/rachel-jeantel-explained-linguistically/

o    John Rickford’s “Rachel Jeantel’s language in the Zimmerman trial,” Language Log: http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=5161
