Recent Visitors to the MFA Program
We sponsor a dazzling series of 15-20 poetry and fiction readings each year (see our Visiting Writers Series calendar). These writers not only offer public readings but also meet with students for substantive pedagogical encounters: in the classroom, in special workshops, or in tutorials. We have also launched an annual series of week-long residencies by distinguished writers: Derek Walcott and Michael Ondaatje in 1998-99; Seamus Heaney, Richard Ford, and Maxine Hong Kingston in 1999-2000; Athol Fugard and Russell Banks in 2000-2001; Grace Paley and Robert Hass in 2001-2002; and Philip Levine and Nicholson Baker in 2002-2003; John Edgar Wideman and Frank Bidart in 2003-2004; Paul Muldoon in 2004; Jonathan Franzen and Robert Pinsky in 2005-2006; Jeffrey Eugenides and Carolyn Forche in 2006-2007; Steven Millhauser and Lynne McMahon in 2007-2008.
