ACADEMY OF AMERICAN POETS | BAIN-SWIGGETT
MICHAEL R. GUTTERMAN
| THEODORE ROETHKE

THE ACADEMY OF AMERICAN POETS PRIZE

Two awards of $l00 are offered by this national organization for poems submitted by University of Michigan students. One prize will go to a graduate student, the other to an undergraduate. No specific form is suggested or required for this contest, which was endowed by Mrs. Sharon A. Galley in memory of her late husband, David Galley, who was a l966 graduate of the University of Michigan. See below for entry requirements.

THE BAIN-SWIGGETT PRIZE

An award of $600 for the best poem in traditional form by a University of Michigan student (undergraduate or graduate). "Traditional form" has been interpreted to mean metered, but not necessarily rhymed, verse. See below for entry requirements.

THE MICHAEL R. GUTTERMAN AWARD IN POETRY

This contest offers a first prize of $550 and a second prize of $400 awarded annually from funds contributed by Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Gutterman as a memorial to their son. The terms of the bequest stipulate that the prize poems "shall exemplify the new, the unusual, and the radical." See below for entry requirements.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
The above awards are open to all University of Michigan students with no particular course or hour requirements. A student may compete for one, two, or all three contests provided they meet the following restrictions:

  • No student may enter more than three poems in each contest.
  • The same poem shall not be entered in more than one of the contests or in the Hopwood Underclassmen Contest or Jeffrey Weisberg Poetry Contest.
  • No poem which has won another award may be entered in these contests.
  • No student who has won one of these awards may compete again in the same contest, nor may a winning poem be subsequently entered in any other Hopwood Program Contest, with the exception of fellowship/scholarship contests.
  • No poem that has been published in a medium other than a college or high school magazine or newspaper may be entered in the contests.

All entries shall be typewritten or wordprocessed and submitted in triplicate on white paper. Computer printouts are acceptable. Each of these three sets must be accompanied by an entry blank (download PDF). If a student is entering more than one poem in a contest, the originals of the poems, plus the entry blank, should be stapled together as one set, with two identical copies (including entry blanks) comprising the second and third sets. If you receive need-based financial aid and would like us to delay payment until the beginning of spring term (May) so your award won’t alter your current financial aid allocation, please check “delay payment.” Binders, pen names, and transcripts are not to be used in these contests.

The deadline for submission is the first Wednesday in December, by 12:00 noon--ABSOLUTELY NO LATER--in the Hopwood Room, 1176 Angell Hall. All contest deadlines are enforced to the minute and students are strongly urged to turn in their poems early.
