Research Interests

Primary Interests

Film; modern drama (English, American, and European); comparative literature (English, German, French); drama other than modern (particularly Renaissance and ancient); comedy and the comic; problems of translation; problems of the theater.

Secondary Interests

Play- and screenwriting; fiction; satire of cabaret comics, including songs (particularly German and French); music; foreign languages.


The Hooded Eagle: Modern German Drama on the New York Stage (Syracuse University Press, 1968); Gerhart Hauptmann’s Before Daybreak; A Translation and an Introduction (University of North Carolina Press, 1978); translations of fiction and drama; articles on drama, film, fiction; contributed sections to books by several hands; reviews.
