Xylem Magazine

About the Journal

Generally only used when considering the vascular tissue of plants, Xylem is also the name of the Undergraduate English Association's annually published literary journal − a collection of the best prose, poetry and art by University of Michigan students. The journal not only exclusively features undergraduate work, but all aspects of publicity, production, and publication are entirely student-run.

All students are encouraged to submit art and writing for consideration. Beyond merely submitting work, there are numerous other ways to become involved in the creation of this publication − from publicity to layout design to judging submissions. If you are interested in the field of print media or the arts generally, please contact us to find ways in which you can get involved with the UEA or Xylem in specific. We look forward to meeting you.

Submitting Content and Contributing to the Journal

Following are the submission guidelines for prose, poetry, and artwork. Submissions not meeting the guidelines will not be considered for publication. You must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Michigan to submit.

All work must be submitted electronically to xylem@umich.edu for consideration. Submissions are accepted from October 1 until midnight February 28.

Poetry and Prose

  • Send all submissions as email attachments to xylem@umich.edu, preferably as Microsoft Word Documents.
  • Include your UM student ID number, name, and email address on each page in the header.
  • The Word file should be 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
  • Poetry may be single spaced.
  • Submit up to 8 pages of work, irrespective of how long each piece is. This can be a combination of prose and poetry of any individual length so long as the entire submission does not exceed 8 pages. Multiple poems or stories may be submitted at the same time. The guidelines above apply to every poem.

Photographs and Art

  • Submit art and photos as email attachments, preferably as jpeg files.
  • Include your UM student ID number, name, and email address on each page in the header.
  • Title each file as the name of the work of art or photography.

Multiple pieces of artwork may be submitted at the same time. The guidelines above apply to each work. If you wish to have your artwork returned, send an e-mail requesting its return to uea@umich.edu before March 1st.

Miscellaneous Notes

All Xylem submissions must have an accompanying signed submission form. Your signature is required to have your work considered for publication. By signing the form, you give the UEA permission to print your work, as well as make small spelling or textual edits. Additionally, by signing, you declare that the work you are submitting is your own, previously unpublished work and that it is not plagiarized or adapted from any other source.
