Since Dean Robert Owen and the College Curriculum Committee instituted the possibility of academic minors, the English department has received a great many inquiries from students who wonder if and when English might institute a minor.
The short answer to this question is that we have no plans now or at any time in the foreseeable future to offer an academic minor. We take this position not due to any opposition to the idea of minors, but simply because we do not have the faculty resources to handle the increased number of students that an academic minor in English would bring to our department. We hope that those of you who have been closed out of English courses or who have been put on the waitlists attached to virtually every class we offer every term will appreciate our concern for our concentrators.
We should add here that English is a very popular double major. Our current concentration requirements stipulate two prerequisite courses and 27 upper-level credits. We offer a wide number of courses fulfilling our distribution requirements every term. Since the essence of work in English is analysis and communication, the major is one that fits extremely well with a wide variety of other majors. We urge you, then, to consider a double major, rather than merely a minor in the field.
