230: Intro to Novel and Short Story

Rather than a comprehensive survey of the short story and novel, this course offers an introduction to the basic techniques of analyzing prose fiction.  Working with short stories and novels, students learn to define questions of narrative construction, voice, characterization, theme, and style.   At least three novels will be read in addition to numerous short stories.  Students should expect to read substantial amounts of fiction, to participate in class discussions, and to write several short literary analyses.

Registered & Waitlisted Students

Please remember that you must attend BOTH the first and second class meetings in order to secure your position on the class roster or the waitlist. Failure to attend either meeting can result in your being dropped from the course or the waitlist.
