Academic Affairs: Faculty Awards

Collegiate Professorships are nominated by the unit, and the number available changes yearly. Those selected are named for five-year renewable terms, and the candidates must be outstanding in scholarship, teaching, and service. Please call the Dean's Office 734.764.3514 for additional information. The steps are:

  1. Unit-heads send their initial nominations in the form of a cover letter with the CV of the nominee attached. From these nominations, the Executive Committee makes specific selections that they will give their full consideration in the winter term.
  2. For those nominees who make the short list, a dossier is prepared and submitted to the Executive Committee in the winter term. The dossier should contain:
    • Outside letters establishing the candidate's place in their field, along with a brief description of the letter writers,
    • A rigorous and thorough evaluation of their scholarship, teaching, and service written by the unit, along with letters from other units evaluating the candidate's contributions there, if appropriate. Please comment upon departmental, College, University, and/or national service,
    • Evidence of teaching excellence such as student evaluations for recent years, communications from current and former undergraduate or graduate students, postdocs, etc.
Use dossiers from previously successful nominations from your unit as a guide. The competition is very intense and the dossiers should be prepared with that in mind.

The Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award and Distinguished University Professorships are awarded by Rackham. See their web site for details:

Excellence in Concentration Advising is awarded to student advisors. The call for nominations is sent in January to Academic Affairs and the Counseling Office for submission by March 9th. The call for nominations for Excellence in Education is sent out in September. Both of these are handled by LSA Undergraduate Education—call 4-0320 for information. They also handle other awards, and a list of these can be obtained directly from them.
