Class of 1923 Memorial Teaching Award

Awarded each year by the College Executive Committee. While this award recognizes a faculty member’s overall teaching excellence, it is given to individuals whose achievements and promise auger well for a productive career as a scholar.

Eligibility requirements:

  • One or more faculty members are chosen each year.
  • Candidates are among those recommended for promotion to associate professor with tenure.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated outstanding teaching since date of hire to the tenure-track.
  • Candidates should be highly dedicated to undergraduate education.

Selection process:

  • No additional materials are submitted.
  • There are no nomination steps.
  • The College Executive Committee selects the final candidate.
  • Candidates are notified by email from the Dean following approval of their promotion at the May Regents’ meeting.
  • Candidates will receive a certificate acknowledging achievements in undergraduate teaching and a prize of $5,000 at the first faculty meeting in the fall.

John Dewey Teaching Award

Awarded each year by the College Executive Committee. This award is named in honor of the philosopher John Dewey, who began his career at the University of Michigan (1884-1894).  Honorees are recognized for modeling the full range of John Dewey’s talents:  scholarly productivity, strong leadership, and engagement with and care for students.  In particular, the committee considers each candidate’s long term commitment to the education of undergraduate students.

Eligibility requirements:

  • One or more faculty members are chosen each year.
  • Candidates are among those recommended for promotion to professor with tenure.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated outstanding teaching since last promotion.
  • Candidates should be highly dedicated to undergraduate education.

Selection process:

  • No additional materials are submitted.
  • There are no nomination steps.
  • The College Executive Committee selects the final candidate.
  • Candidates are notified by email from the Dean following approval of their promotion at the May Regents’ meeting.
  • Candidates will receive a certificate acknowledging achievements in undergraduate teaching and a prize of $10,000 at the first faculty meeting in the fall.
