Arthur F. Thurnau Professorships

During the academic year the Provost’s office selects a group of tenured faculty as Thurnau Professors. Candidates must be outstanding in undergraduate education. Those selected are named for 5-year renewable terms. LSA units may nominate only one tenured faculty member each year.

Nomination steps are:

  1. Chair/director forwards a first-stage dossier that consists of:
    • Cover memo from chair/director,
    • Current CV, and
    • List of undergraduate courses taught in the past eight terms. See Dean’s letter for specifics.

      SUBMISSION DEADLINE: OCTOBER 7, 2013

      From these nominations, the Executive Committee creates a shortlist. The Dean's Office will notify the chairs/directors as to which nominations should be developed for submission to the Provost’s office following their guidelines.
  2. Chair/director forwards a second-stage dossier that contains:
    • Hard copy of a completed and signed nomination cover sheet,
    • Cover letter from chair/director or unit nominator (go to link above for specifics),
    • List of undergraduate courses taught in the past eight terms (go to link above for specifics),
    • Three letters of support (additional letters will not be read) from current or past undergraduate students,
    • Three letters of support from colleagues (additional letters will not be read) in addition to the letter from the nominator, and
    • Current CV

Collegiate Professorships

Awarded by the College from nominations submitted by the units.  Candidates must be outstanding in scholarship, teaching, and service.  Those selected are named for 5-year renewable terms.  LSA units may nominate only one tenured faculty member each year.

Nomination steps are:

  1. Chair/director sends an initial nomination packet that consists of:
    • Cover memo from chair/director,
    • Current CV, and
    • Detailed description of the candidate’s accomplishments in scholarship, teaching, and service.

      DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF THESE MATERIALS:   DECEMBER 2, 2013

      The Dean’s office will deliver nominations to CRLT/Provost’s Office by December 2, 2013. From these nominations, the Executive Committee creates a shortlist. The Dean’s Office will notify the chairs/directors as to which nominations should be developed for the final round of consideration.
  2. For those selected by the Executive Committee for the shortlist, chairs/directors forward a more complete dossier that contains:
    • Outside letters establishing the candidate's place in his/her field and a brief description of the letter writers,
    • A rigorous and thorough evaluation of their scholarship, teaching, and service written by the unit, along with letters from other units evaluating the candidate's contributions there, if appropriate.  Please comment upon unit, College, University, and/or national service, and
    • Evidence of teaching excellence such as student evaluations for recent years, communications from current and former undergraduate or graduate students, postdocs, etc.

      In late Spring, final selections will be made from this select group.  The Dean will send an email notification to the candidates and the chairs/directors.

Distinguished University Professorships (DUPs)

Awarded by the Rackham Graduate School, it is one of the highest University honors and recognizes exceptional scholarly and/or creative achievements, national and international reputation, superior teaching and mentoring, and an impressive record of service.  LSA units may nominate one faculty member at the rank of full professor each year.  Nominees will normally already be in a collegiate or endowed chair.
