Memo regarding College Policies (January 5, 2009)
January 5, 2009
To: LSA Faculty and Instructional Staff
From: Esrold A. Nurse, Assistant Dean
Greetings and welcome back to the Winter 2009 term after what I hope was a pleasant holiday break. Once again, this memo serves as a gentle reminder of College policies and relevant information.
The last day for students to drop or add classes without getting permission, as well as to elect a course pass/fail is Tuesday, January 27, 2009. The student deadline for finishing incomplete work from last semester is Tuesday, February 3.
For students completing their sophomore year this is an important term because it is typically when they make major decisions. Don’t be surprised if these students look to you for advice about your department’s majors and minors. It may be helpful to check with your department advisor for major information to pass on to students. The annual Major Fair is also a good opportunity for students to learn about the various LSA majors and minors. The Fair is scheduled on Tuesday, March 24, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, in the Michigan Union Ballroom located on the second floor.
The 2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium is in full swing; you may want to highlight events, as appropriate, in your classes. See the following website: mlksymposium.umich.edu for more information. No regular classes are scheduled on Monday, January 19.
In addition, you may want to draw students' attention to activities related to the current LSA theme year, "The Universe: Yours to Discover," and the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads program. See: www.lsa.umich.edu/universe and aareads.aadl.org/ for more detailed information.
Among the primary responsibilities of the Assistant Dean of Student Academic Affairs is the oversight of the academic judiciary processes in the College. For additional information, please refer to our academic integrity web site at: www.lsa.umich.edu/academicintegrity .
As always, we in Student Academic Affairs are available to help clarify issues regarding student concerns or academic policy. Don’t hesitate to call us or email us with inquiries.
Best wishes for a successful term.
