TO: All Faculty and Instructional Staff, College of LS&A
FROM: Esrold A. Nurse, Assistant Dean
RE: Undergraduate Student Issues
Welcome to those of you new to the College; and to those of you returning, welcome back. I write to offer the support of the Office of Student Academic Affairs and the Newnan Advising Center. We are ready to answer questions about College policy or to help address student issues.
An outbreak of the H1N1 virus on our campus this fall could result in serious disruption in the instructional process, i.e., class attendance or instructor illness, or interruption of instruction. Should your class be disrupted in any way this year by an outbreak of the H1N1 virus, please contact me. You may also go to the following website for more information: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/facstaff/studentacademicaffairs.
If a student’s academic performance is poor or he or she has been absent from class for an extended period, you can use the Undergraduate Student Progress Report to alert us. Sending us a report as soon as you recognize problems will allow for a more timely resolution. You can submit the report online at our web site: http://tinyurl.com/LSA-StudentProgressRept.
Helpful information about students and College policy can be found on the web version of the Handbook for Faculty and Instructional Staff at http://tinyurl.com/lsa-instructor-handbk . If your questions are not answered, we are always happy to discuss student issues with you by phone or in person.
Please note the following important deadlines: Monday, September 28th, is the last day of the regular drop/add period and the last day a student can choose to elect a course with the pass/fail option. Monday, October 5, is the deadline for submitting incomplete work from Winter, Spring, or Summer 2009 courses graded as Incomplete. The late drop deadline is Friday, November 13. The Fall Study Break is on Monday/Tuesday, October 19/20.
Cases of alleged academic misconduct should be referred to the Assistant Dean’s office. Please refer to the website for Academic Integrity in the College of LSA at www.lsa.umich.edu/academicintegrity . Feel free to consult with us, if necessary, before bringing charges. Also, I encourage you to remind students of your expectations that everyone will act with integrity, and to reinforce that message on your syllabus.
Save a copy of this message so that you have the links to on-line information resources, as well as the contact information for LSA Student Academic Affairs. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call me.
Best wishes for a successful semester!
