About Us

Our Department

Message from the Chair Welcome to the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, home to U-M's German Studies, Dutch and Flemish Studies, and Scandinavian Studies Programs!

Our language courses are wide-ranging, challenging, and fun! Minors are available in German or Scandinavian Studies, and German is an option in the Global Engineering Program. The undergraduate major in German takes advantage of our outstanding faculty, who hold degrees in a wide range of fields, and have won numerous awards for research and teaching. One of the largest German programs in the country both in numbers of majors and minors and the size of our faculty, we are able to offer courses not only in German language and literature, but also in

  • Business German
  • Scientific German
  • German history
  • Film
  • Politics
  • Music, and much more!

For a full list of our undergraduate and graduate courses, see the LSA Course Guide.

FYI: The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts recognized the excellence of our undergraduate courses by making Germanic Languages and Literatures the first humanities department, and the first smaller department, to win the much-coveted Award for the Greatest Contribution to Undergraduate Education.

Whatever your interest, I hope that you will enjoy reading about our many dynamic and innovative programs.
