German Day: Rules & Regulations

Is this your first German Day? Perhaps you'd just like a refresher? Here is what it's all about. If you have any questions or comments on the rules or their interpretation, please contact german.day@umich.edu

Art Displays made either by individuals, small groups or an entire class. Please bring a typed card which includes: school, artists, and level for each entry. Some easels will be provided, but please try to bring self-standing displays or bring your own easels. Absolutely no tape is allowed on the walls! If you want to keep a display, please take it with you.

Commercials [3 min/student or group]. There are four levels of commercials. Each school is allowed 2 entries per level. The commercials should not be longer than 3 minutes.

German for All (Deutsch feur Alle) Brand new competition for 2009! Promote German language and culture in your community. For example, students might perform a musical piece from German composer, teach basic German words and phrases to an elementary class, foster a city partnership or exchange program have a German bake sale, or "Taste of Germany" fair - the possibilities are really endless!

Students have until March 1st to complete their project or activity and submit a write-up to us, complete with evidence such as pictures, videos, URLs, etc. We will then judge the projects and award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes to all contributing members. Our thinking was that students from schools that are unable to participate in German Day on March 20th might enjoy the opportunity to compete in their own way, at their own pace.

Music [8 min/student or group]. Students will perform musical presentations individually, in pairs, or in groups. There will be no levels. A school may have only 2 entries. Musical presentations will be organized into “like” categories depending on the entries we receive. No presentation may be longer than 8 minutes. Set-up and break-down time must be included in the 8 minutes. Judges have the right to stop presentations at 8 minutes. Some of the first-placed musical presentations may be performed during the afternoon awards ceremony, depending on time constraints. Entries which are not properly identified will not be scheduled to present (Instrument, composer, title or name of piece to be performed, and performer).

Poetry [5 min/student]. Each participant will memorize one poem. There will be four levels. Students will be judged on pronunciation, phrasing, presentation, interpretation, and accuracy. Please provide hardcopies of the various poems to your students. 2 entries per school per level. View poems.

Reading [5 min/student or group]. There are four levels. Students will be given a text they have never seen before. They will have 1–2 minutes to look it over before reading the text for the judges. They are judged on pronunciation, accuracy, and fluency. 2 entries per school per level.

Skits [8 min/student or group]. There will four levels of skits. A school may enter no more then 1 skit per level. No presentation may be longer than 8 minutes. Performances will be judged on pronunciation, originality, expression, projection, and presentation. Some of the first-placed skits will be performed during the afternoon awards ceremony, depending on time constraints.

Conversational Interactions [5 min/student or group]. There will be four levels. The contestants at each level will interact orally with the judges. Judges may introduce one or some of the following topics: Wie geht’s?, meine Familie, meine Hobbies, mein Zimmer, im Klassenzimmer, das Haus, Kleidung, Essen und Trinken, das Wetter, Sport, die Arbeit, in der Schule, letzten Sommer, eine Reise, meine Pläne für die Zukunft, Filme, Bücher, mein Lieblings _____. Students may also introduce topics. This will not be a question/answer session. Judgments will be based on pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, quantity, and fluency. 2 entries per school per level.

Spelling Bee There will be two levels. The spelling words will all be in German (using the German alphabet). The difficulty/length of the words will increase as the competition progresses (i.e. normal spelling bee rules), and once a student misses, s/he is out of the competition.

Video and DVD [10 min/video]. Students alone or in groups will produce a video or a DVD in German. There will be two main categories: less advanced students and more advanced students. Videos should be no longer than 10 minutes. See guidelines for info on appropriate video and DVD entries.

Web. Students alone or in groups will produce a website in German. There will be two main categories: less advanced students and more advanced students. The sites should be based on the current theme for German Day.

Deadline for registration is Monday, March 9, 2009. The deadline for submitting videos, DVDs, and website addresses (URLs) is also Monday, March 9, 2009.
