  • About

Ariana Orozco is completing her dissertation, “East German Material Culture in Contemporary German Prose,” (to be defended June 2016). Her dissertation argues that literary works by Jenny Erpenbeck, Judith Schalansky, and Julia Franck that foreground the intersection of material culture and narrative aesthetics are central to understanding memory contests surrounding the discussion on how the East German past should be remembered.

Her research interests include memory studies, material culture, museum studies, post-reunification German literature, popular culture, gender and sexuality, and transnational German studies. She is a member of Alamanya: Transnational German Studies Workshop and was co-coordinator of the group during the 2014-2015 academic year. She is also member of American Friends of Marbach and has published reviews on contemporary novels by Ulrike Almut Sandig and Birgit Vanderbeke in Focus.

Prior to coming to Michigan, she spent a year in Johanngeorgenstadt, Germany as a Fulbright TA. She received her BA in Comparative Literature from Williams College.
