Deutsch 101 Hausaufgaben für die ABENDKLASSE

(Sektion 005, Dienstag und Donnerstag 7-9)

Winter 2013

Januar

Februar

März April

Here are the suggested assignments--but please be aware that your instructor may make changes to this in class!

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the class day FOLLOWING the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted. Teil 1 of the homework generally prepares you for the first hour of class on the following class day, and Teil 2 prepares you for the second hour. The first day's assignment actually has three parts (Teil 0, Teil 1 and Teil 2). Please remember that late homework will receive a "check minus," and homework that is more than two class days late will not be accepted (unless, of course, you have a good excuse for handing it in late).  If you notice any mistakes, please email Hartmut or inform your instructor!

Evening Section Exam Conflicts

If you're enrolled in a course that schedules tests outside of class time (e.g. Math, Chemistry, Physics), please ask for a schedule of exams now. Once you have it, please inform the instructor of the dates when you have class, so s/he can arrange an alternate exam time for you (and any other students with similar conflicts). If s/he absolutely refuses, please ask him/her to email your German instructor, so your absence for the exam can be excused.

Evening Section Attendance Policy

This is the same as the regular attendance policy listed in the "Kursinformation," with one important clarification: since the evening section meets for two hours at a time, missing an entire class means you are accruing two absence hours (==> if it is an excused absence, it would count as one absence hour). If you are an hour late or you leave an hour early, that counts as one absence hour (==> half an absence hour if it's excused).

iLrn Assignments

For each chapter, the iLrn assignment is the biggest assignment. We have broken it down for you into a few exercises to do each day - but we are not requiring you to stick to this recommended schedule. Towards the end of each chapter (generally the day before the review sheet is due), the online homework schedule will say "Chapter ___ iLrn assignments must be completed by the beginning of the next class." This is when your instructor will check that you have completed this assignment. This means that in theory, you could do the entire assignment for the chapter the night before it's due - but if you do that, you won't learn much from it. Success in this course correlates closely with doing the iLrn assignments thoughtfully, so please start early, even if you don't stick precisely to the recommended schedule!

For iLrn homework, you should start each assigned exercise, but you need not finish it if you think you've gotten the point and don't need more practice.  In general, if an assignment doesn't seem useful to you, talk to your instructor about whether you might be able to do something else instead that seems more worthwhile to you.

Please use your common sense when the program tells you your response was incorrect: there may sometimes be more than one correct answer, and sometimes the program may grade your answer as incorrect only because of a trivial spelling mistake; it's also possible that the program may make a mistake. For open-ended questions, the program initially gives you 0 points regardless of your answer, until your instructor reviews the activity. If in doubt about a wrong answer, please ask your instructor before assuming you made a mistake!

TEIL 0

Assignments are listed on the day on which they are assigned. They are due at the beginning of class on the class day FOLLOWING the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted, i.e. what is listed here is due ON TUESDAY, not today. Think of this homework schedule as what your instructor would be writing on the board today in class, if s/he still wrote homework on the board

1. If your physical copy of the book has not yet arrived, you will need to print pages 1-19 for Tuesday's class (Tag 2). You can print from the eBook tab in iLrn, but it's probably easier for you to find the pdf of Chapter 1 of Vorsprung on CTools and print the first few pages of that (Resources > Vorsprung_chapter01.pdf)

2a. Sehen Sie [=watch] das Kapitel 1 Video. Klicken Sie hier!

2b. When you're ready, click here to take the online Kapitel 1 "pre-quiz."

3. Lesen Sie [=read] die Kursinformation, die Information über die "Oral Exams" und Vorsprung [V] Seite xi-xiv & xix-xx

4. OPTIONAL: Watch the "Kapitel 1 Videos zum Spaß [=for fun]." These include: (i) Die Küstenwache [=coast guard] (ii) Die "Twist and Shout" Szene aus Ferris Bueller (iii) "Du": David Hasselhoff singt auf Deutsch (iv) "I've been looking for Freedom"--David Hasselhoff (v) German Lessons: Unit 1 - Saying "hello" in German (vi) Sesamstraße: Ernie zählt Äpfel (vii) Mo Do: Eins zwei Polizei (viii) Die Toten Hosen: Zehn kleine Jägermeister

Please accept the invitation and post a "test post" in which you simply say what your favorite German word is. This is not an official homework assignment: we just want to make sure you can all post to the blog before the first blog assignment is due. There will be a CTools announcement today or tomorrow with more detailed information.

TEIL 1

Assignments are listed on the day on which they are assigned. They are due at the beginning of class on the class day FOLLOWING the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted, i.e. what is listed here is due ON THURSDAY, not today. Think of this homework schedule as what your instructor would be writing on the board today in class, if s/he still wrote homework on the board

0. If you are still printing out Kapitel 1 bit by bit, what you will need for Thursday is pages 1-31.

1. Go to iLrn, click on the "Assignment Calendar" tab, choose "Kapitel 1" from the "Section" pulldown menu, and do: W1-G, W1-H, W1-U, L1-H, L1-I (Click here for general info on iLrn assignments)

2. OPTIONAL: Schoolhouse Rock! For an entertaining and nostalgic review of the basics of English grammar (which will help you a lot to understand the grammatical concepts in this course, and your future German courses), click here. You'll find links to all the Schoolhouse Rock episodes; you want the ones in the "Grammar Rock" section. Clicking on each link gets you to a page with lyrics and credits, and a YouTube link at the top. If the YouTube link is bad, just search for the title to find an alternate version. Even if you know all about grammar, you may want to watch the classic "Conjunction Junction." Newer, but very sweet and particularly helpful for this course, is "The Tale of Mr. Morton" (here's an alternative YouTube link for this one with better audio), which explains subjects and predicates. [Nothing to do with grammar, but the other must-see Schoolhouse Rock classic is "I'm Just a Bill."]

TEIL 2

1. Lesen Sie den Text "Essen und trinken in den USA". Click here to download the text combined with vocabulary notes and a worksheet, which you should fill out and hand in. We're only having you read part of the original text, since the whole text would be too long. See the links below if you're interested in seeing the entire text, and possibly reading the rest of it for your next AMD. Trying to understand this text completely at this stage in 101 would be much too difficult, but we want you to see that you can understand its main points. Read through the entire text once quickly without stopping (don't let this take longer than 5 minutes!), then read it through one more time and answer the questions as you go. You only need to understand the text well enough to answer the questions. Please resist the urge to look up every unknown word: the vocabulary notes we've provided should be all you need!

  • Click here to see the original version of this text online.
  • Click here if you want to complete a worksheet on the entire text. This is identical to the worksheet above, but includes the portions of the text we deleted, and some additional vocabulary notes and questions. If you hand in this worksheet on the complete text, it will count for this assignment AND for your next AMD [no need to post on the blog!].
  • We strongly encourage you to work on this assignment in pairs or groups. If you do so, you can just hand in one copy of the worksheet with all your names on it, and you will all get the same grade!

2. Absprungtext lesen: Do iLrn 3-21, 3-22 & 3-23 as follows: First do 3-21 (Wortdetektiv); then scan the "Heidelberg und Mannheim" text (V Seite 94-95) for the answers to 3-22; and finally read the text thoroughly in order to do 3-23.

4. RECOMMENDED: Lesen Sie "Some Hints on How to Guess Gender"

  • Optional, but amazingly interesting: Click here for an article on the results of actual empirical research on how language affects the way we think. If you like it, post about it for anAMD. Towards the end, the article describes some research results about noun genders, such as: "For example, when asked to describe a 'key' — a word that is masculine in German and feminine in Spanish — the German speakers were more likely to use words like 'hard,' 'heavy,' 'jagged,' 'metal,' 'serrated,' and 'useful,' whereas Spanish speakers were more likely to say 'golden,' 'intricate,' 'little,' 'lovely,' 'shiny,' and 'tiny.' To describe a 'bridge,' which is feminine in German and masculine in Spanish, the German speakers said 'beautiful,' 'elegant,' 'fragile,' 'peaceful,' 'pretty,' and 'slender,' and the Spanish speakers said 'big,' 'dangerous,' 'long,' 'strong,' 'sturdy,' and 'towering.'"

5. AMD 3. Pick an activity (visit your class blog for ideas!), do it, then post about what you did. Click here for some additional ideas. Please remember to include your name and the assignment name as tags! [If you need an extra day or two to complete this AMD, just let your instructor know!]
