Here are the suggested assignments--but please be aware that your instructor may make changes to this in class!

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the class day FOLLOWING the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted.  Please remember that late homework will receive a "check minus," and homework that is more than two class days late will not be accepted (unless, of course, you have a good excuse for handing it in late).  If you notice any mistakes, please email Hartmut or inform your instructor!

iLrn Assignments

For each chapter, the iLrn assignment is the biggest assignment. We have broken it down for you into a few exercises to do each day - but we are not requiring you to stick to this recommended schedule. Towards the end of each chapter (generally the day before the review sheet is due), the online homework schedule will say "Chapter ___ iLrn assignments must be completed by the beginning of the next class." This is when your instructor will check that you have completed this assignment. This means that in theory, you could do the entire assignment for the chapter the night before it's due - but if you do that, you won't learn much from it. Success in this course correlates closely with doing the iLrn assignments thoughtfully, so please start early, even if you don't stick precisely to the recommended schedule!

For iLrn homework, you should start each assigned exercise, but you need not finish it if you think you've gotten the point and don't need more practice.  In general, if an assignment doesn't seem useful to you, talk to your instructor about whether you might be able to do something else instead that seems more worthwhile to you.

Please use your common sense when the program tells you your response was incorrect: there may sometimes be more than one correct answer, and sometimes the program may grade your answer as incorrect only because of a trivial spelling mistake; it's also possible that the program may make a mistake. For open-ended questions, the program initially gives you 0 points regardless of your answer, until your instructor reviews the activity. If in doubt about a wrong answer, please ask your instructor before assuming you made a mistake!

Please accept the invitation and post a "test post" in which you simply say what your favorite German word is. This is not an official homework assignment: we just want to make sure you can all post to the blog before the first blog assignment is due. There will be a CTools announcement today or tomorrow with more detailed information.

For an entertaining and nostalgic review of the basics of English grammar (which will help you a lot to understand the grammatical concepts in this course, and your future German courses), click here. You'll find links to all the Schoolhouse Rock episodes; you want the ones in the "Grammar Rock" section. Clicking on each link gets you to a page with lyrics and credits, and a YouTube link at the top. If the YouTube link is bad, just search for the title to find an alternate version. Even if you know all about grammar, you may want to watch the classic "Conjunction Junction." Newer, but very sweet and particularly helpful for this course, is "The Tale of Mr. Morton" (here's an alternative YouTube link for this one with better audio), which explains subjects and predicates. [Nothing to do with grammar, but the other must-see Schoolhouse Rock classic is "I'm Just a Bill."]

Trying to understand this text completely at this stage in 101 would be much too difficult, but we want you to see that you can understand its main points. Read through the entire text once quickly without stopping (don't let this take longer than 5 minutes!), then read it through one more time and answer the questions as you go. You only need to understand the text well enough to answer the questions. Please resist the urge to look up every unknown word: the vocabulary notes we've provided should be all you need!

Bring a fun (but inoffensive!) object to class; choose something that won't break if it's passed around in class, and that you're not terrified of losing (it shouldn't get lost during the activity in class, but you never know). Look up the German word for this object (including the gender!) if you don't know it!

  • Optional, but amazingly interesting: Click here for an article on the results of actual empirical research on how language affects the way we think. If you like it, post about it for anAMD. Towards the end, the article describes some research results about noun genders, such as: "For example, when asked to describe a 'key' — a word that is masculine in German and feminine in Spanish — the German speakers were more likely to use words like 'hard,' 'heavy,' 'jagged,' 'metal,' 'serrated,' and 'useful,' whereas Spanish speakers were more likely to say 'golden,' 'intricate,' 'little,' 'lovely,' 'shiny,' and 'tiny.' To describe a 'bridge,' which is feminine in German and masculine in Spanish, the German speakers said 'beautiful,' 'elegant,' 'fragile,' 'peaceful,' 'pretty,' and 'slender,' and the Spanish speakers said 'big,' 'dangerous,' 'long,' 'strong,' 'sturdy,' and 'towering.'"
