Here are the suggested assignments--but please be aware that your instructor may make changes to this in class!

Assignments are listed on the class day on which they are assigned.  They are due on the next class day, unless otherwise noted.  Please remember that late homework will receive a "check minus," and homework that is more than two class days late will not be accepted (unless, of course, you have a good excuse for handing it in late).  If you notice any mistakes, please email Hartmut or inform your instructor!

SAM [Workbook] Assignments

These are due two class days before each test, but we strongly urge you to start on them early. The sooner you get started on them, the more you'll get out of the in-class activities for the chapter, and the better you'll know what you need to ask questions about in class. If you do all of the workbook activities the night before they're due, you'll turn them into busywork, and you won't learn nearly as much from them as you could.

Please remember that for SAM homework, you should start each assigned exercise, but you need not finish it if you think you've gotten the point and don't need more practice.  In general, if some types of assignments don't seem useful to you, talk to your instructor about whether you might be able to do something else instead that seems more worthwhile to you.

  • If you are having trouble seeing the video, click here to download the newest version of Quicktime.
    • A sure sign that you need a new version of Quicktime is if you are hearing audio but seeing a blank screen.
    • If you're having problems but the installer/updater tells you you already have the newest version of Quicktime, try uninstalling Quicktime and then reinstalling it from the site; this may fix your problem.
  • To download the video to your desktop, right-click on it and choose "Save Target As" [on a PC], or hold down the "ctrl" key while you click on it and choose "Save Link As" [on a Mac]. If you don't like Quicktime, this would allow you to try playing the video using some other players:
    • It should play in iTunes. Click View > Actual Size if the screen looks tiny; move the mouse over the bottom of the video to see the controls (Play, Pause etc.)
    • It should also play in the very versatile VLC Media Player. Click here for more info on the VLC Media Player, and download it if you like it.
  • If you continue to have problems, please email Hartmut with a specific description of your problem (e.g. what error message you're getting, what browser & operating system you're using, what you tried to do to fix the problem, whether you've experienced a similar problem in other contexts, etc.)

1b. When you're ready, click here to take the online Kapitel 1 "pre-quiz" and use the "Submit" button to submit your score to your instructor.   • Use the online Flash Card Program to load the Kapitel 1 vocabulary and practice it for a while.

1. Kapitel 1 Kultur-Texte:

  • a. Download and read the pdf brochure How German is American (Source: the Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin).
  • b. Lesen Sie "Brennpunkt Kultur" in V: Seite 13 ("Greetings and farewells"), Seite 17 ("Titles of address") und Seite 30 ("Where German is spoken")
  • Note that class will begin with a mini-quiz on the reading (parts (a) and (b) above).
  • Such (announced) mini-quizzes will be a regular part of the class. They will consist of simple questions that should be easy for you to answer if you did the reading reasonably carefully; generally you will need to get 4 or 5 questions out of 7 or 8 right for full credit, so you needn't worry about knowing every detail!
  • This pdf brochure is not short (50 pages), so we hope you won't print it out: it's meant to be a quick and interesting read and shouldn't take you much more than an hour at the computer. Topics range from the history of German immigration to America, to Kindergarten, Bambi, Oktoberfest, and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.

  • a. For all SAM assignments, you should attempt each assigned exercise, but need not do all the questions if it gets boring and you've gotten the point.
    • The above option applies to all SAM exercises, but in this assignment, it applies especially to SAM Seite 192 Übung I, which is good practice with the alphabet, but painfully slow. If you can do it, that's great, but if it's too boring, don't feel bad about just doing the first two or three!
  • b. Remember to use the answers in CP to correct all SAM exercises in a different color.

  • Please show your instructor your completed Wiederholungsblatt in class. Your instructor will determine the grade in class by taking a very quick look while you're discussing your responses in pairs, so that you can keep the sheet and continue studying with it.

If you can't find anything you're enthusiastic about doing, please talk to your instructor so s/he can try to help you, since this assignment will be much more effective if you enjoy it

These quizzes will also include a few words that are not on our vocab lists. The goal of this assignment is just to motivate you to begin studying the chapter vocabulary (and, we hope, to motivate some of you to play with this site some more on your own!), so the questions won't cover all of the chapter vocabulary. In order for you to demonstrate that you completed this assignment, we'd like you to do the following:

  • Work on the first exercise and click on "Auswerten" [="Evaluate"] until you've successfully guessed all the words. Click "OK" on the score panel that comes up and proceed to the next step.
  • Take a screenshot of your browser window showing that you've answered each item correctly. Click here for instructions on how to take a screenshot, and samples of what your screenshot could look like.
  • Paste your screenshot into a blank Word document. [Click in the Word document and select Edit > Paste]
  • Repeat this procedure for the remaining 4 exercises.
  • Email this Word document to your instructor as an attachment. Please don't print it out: we don't want you to expend a lot of paper and toner on this assignment. We strongly recommend that for each card, you try to very quickly form a sentence with that word; use some English words if necessary to speed things up. Say (or whisper) your sentences out loud. If you can't come up with a sentence quickly, just move on to the next card.

1b. When you're ready, follow the links below to take some short online quizzes related to the vocabulary for this chapter. See Tag 10 for more detailed instructions, but here is a reminder of the basic procedure you need to follow in order to demonstrate that you completed this assignment:

We're only having you read part of the original text, since the whole text would be too long. See the links below if you're interested in seeing the entire text, and possibly reading the rest of it for your next LLJ. Trying to understand this text completely at this stage in 101 would be much too difficult, but we want you to see that you can understand its main points. Read through the entire text once quickly without stopping (don't let this take longer than 5 minutes!), then read it through one more time and answer the questions as you go. You only need to understand the text well enough to answer the questions. Please resist the urge to look up every unknown word: the vocabulary notes we've provided should be all you need!

1a. Schreiben Sie SAM Seite 27-43 Übung C-G, I, J, L-P, S-U. 

  • For Übung C, just pick two of the countries and do the "ich" line!
  • For Übung I, the picture tells you what to write about each twin! For no.2, Karin is wearing jeans.

1b. Schreiben Sie SAM Seite 201-6 Zieltextdiktat, Wortdetektiv und Übung A-F, H-J.

  • Übung D: for 1 & 2, you actually hear the conjunction in the dialogue; for 3-5, you need to decide which conjunction is logical based on the dialogue
  • Übung F: for "Summe," write the total amount of the bill; for "Kleingeld" [=small change] write the amount of change Erika and her father receive
  • Übung H: Only do Nos. 1-4. The audio track for no. 5 does not match the options provided, and there isn't one for no. 6. For 1-4, the idea is to listen for the item that's being looked for, and then choose the answer that includes a pronoun appropriate for that item.

We will give you your first essay grade for Seite 43, Übung U. You should write 125-150 words.

  • Just write about two people: yourself and a male or female friend.
  • You need not write out all the sentences you're prompted to write on pp. 42-43, but write out a few that you can use in your essay. A good essay will put these sentences in some sort of order, and will also include one or two other things that you can say using the German you've learned so far.
  • Try to avoid saying things you haven't learned the German for yet. In particular, please don't write your ideas out in English and then translate them into German: this is very hard work, and produces very poor results!
  • Click here for some additional hints and reminders for the first essay.
  • Rules/Warnings:
    • If you get someone who is proficient in German to proofread your essay, we will consider this cheating. We recognize that you can learn from having someone look over your essay for you, but we have to enforce this rule in order to make the grading fair for everyone. It IS OK for you to ask such a person (or an instructor in the German Lab) 3 or 4 specific questions on how to say something.
    • If you use an online translator for significant parts of your essay, we will consider this cheating. Note that online translators tend to produce noticeably absurd translations. Consequently, even if your instructor is not sure you are using an online translator, you are likely to get a bad grade for your essay if you use one. You also risk becoming a laughing stock in our department, like the student (this really happened!) who submitted an essay on "Ludwig Dienstwagen Beethoven" ["Dienstwagen" is a possible translation of "van," though it generally means "company car"...].
