- If you are having trouble seeing the video, click here to download the newest version of Quicktime.
- A sure sign that you need a new version of Quicktime is if you are hearing audio but seeing a blank screen.
- If you're having problems but the installer/updater tells you you already have the newest version of Quicktime, try uninstalling Quicktime and then reinstalling it from the site; this may fix your problem.
- To download the video to your desktop, right-click on it and choose "Save Target As" [on a PC], or hold down the "ctrl" key while you click on it and choose "Save Link As" [on a Mac]. If you don't like Quicktime, this would allow you to try playing the video using some other players:
- It should play in iTunes. Click View > Actual Size if the screen looks tiny; move the mouse over the bottom of the video to see the controls (Play, Pause etc.)
- It should also play in the very versatile VLC Media Player. Click here for more info on the VLC Media Player, and download it if you like it.
- If you continue to have problems, please email Hartmut with a specific description of your problem (e.g. what error message you're getting, what browser & operating system you're using, what you tried to do to fix the problem, whether you've experienced a similar problem in other contexts, etc.)
1b. When you're ready, click here to take the online Kapitel 1 "pre-quiz" and use the "Submit" button to submit your score to your instructor. You need to get a score of 80% or higher in order to get a "check." You may try the exercise repeatedly, and if you like you can submit your results more than once. If you submit a score below 80%, you will get a "check minus" for this assignment.
- If nothing happens when you click "submit," make sure you've enabled popups for this page
- You will be asked 20 questions. IF YOU GET A QUESTION WRONG, KEEP TRYING UNTIL YOU GET IT RIGHT. THE PROGRAM WILL ONLY CALCULATE YOUR SCORE IF YOU HAVE ANSWERED ALL THE QUESTIONS. Incorrect guesses will reduce your score.

1. Kapitel 1 Kultur-Texte:
- a. Download and read the pdf brochure How German is American (Source: the Max
Kade Institute for German-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin).
- b. Lesen Sie "Brennpunkt Kultur" in V: Seite 13 ("Greetings and farewells"), Seite 17 ("Titles of address") und Seite 30 ("Where German is spoken")
- Note that class will begin with a mini-quiz on the reading (parts (a) and (b) above).
- Such (announced) mini-quizzes will be a regular part of the class. They will consist of simple questions that should be easy for you to answer if you did the reading reasonably carefully; generally you will need to get 4 or 5 questions out of 7 or 8 right for full credit, so you needn't worry about knowing every detail!
- This pdf brochure is not short (50 pages), so we hope you won't print it out: it's meant to be a quick and interesting read and shouldn't take you much more than an hour at the computer. Topics range from the history of German immigration to America, to Kindergarten, Bambi, Oktoberfest, and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.
2. OPTIONAL: Watch the "Kapitel 1 Videos zum Spaß [=for fun]":
- Die Küstenwache [=coast guard]
- "Du": David Hasselhoff singt auf Deutsch
- "I've been looking for Freedom"--David Hasselhoff Parodie
- German Lessons: Unit 1 - Saying "hello" in German
- Mo Do: Eins zwei Polizei
- Die Toten Hosen: Zehn kleine Jägermeister
3. OPTIONAL: Look over this great compilation of greetings and farewells in German-speaking countries! |

questions if it gets boring and you've gotten the point.
- The above option applies to all SAM exercises, but in this assignment, it applies especially to SAM Seite 192 Übung I, which is good practice with the alphabet, but painfully slow. If you can do it, that's great, but if it's too boring, don't feel bad about just doing the first two or three!
- b. Remember to

color.

- Look through the "Wissenswerte Vokabeln" sections in Kapitel 2
- Read over the Kapitel 2 vocabulary a few times (V Seite 72-73)
- Use the online Flash Card Program to load the Kapitel 2 vocabulary and practice it for a while.
1b. When you're ready, follow the links below to take some short online quizzes related to the vocabulary for this chapter (and also reviewing some Kapitel 1 vocab). These quizzes will also include a few words that are not on our vocab lists. The goal of this assignment is just to motivate you to begin studying the chapter vocabulary (and, we hope, to motivate some of you to play with this site some more on your own!), so the questions won't cover all of the chapter vocabulary. In order for you to demonstrate that you completed this assignment, we'd like you to do the following:
- Work on the first exercise and click on "Auswerten" [="Evaluate"] until you've successfully guessed all the words. Click "OK" on the score panel that comes up and proceed to the next step.
- Take a screenshot of your browser window showing that you've answered each item correctly. Click here for instructions on how to take a screenshot, and samples of what your screenshot could look like.
- Paste your screenshot into a blank Word document. [Click in the Word document and select Edit > Paste]
- Repeat this procedure for the remaining 4 exercises.
- Email this Word document to your instructor as an attachment. Please don't print it out: we don't want you to expend a lot of paper and toner on this assignment. If you have technical difficulties, just explain them to your instructor in class and s/he will try to help you. If you don't know your instructor's email address, send your email to Hartmut and let him know your instructor's name.
- Here are the links to the five exercises. Note that for most of the exercises, if you're not sure what the picture is supposed to represent, you can roll your mouse over the image and then a label for the picture will appear in English and French (!).

We're only having you read part of the original text, since the whole text would be too long. See the links below if you're interested in seeing the entire text, and possibly reading the rest of it for your next LLJ. Trying to understand this text completely at this stage in 101 would be much too difficult, but we want you to see that you can understand its main points. Read through the entire text once quickly without stopping (don't let this take longer than 5 minutes!), then read it through one more time and answer the questions as you go. You only need to understand the text well enough to answer the questions. Please resist the urge to look up every unknown word: the vocabulary notes we've provided should be all you need!
- Click here to see the original version of this text online.
- Click here if you want to complete a worksheet on the entire text. This is identical to the worksheet above, but includes the portions of the text we deleted, and some additional vocabulary notes and questions. If you hand in this worksheet on the complete text, it will count for this assignment AND for your next LLJ.
- We strongly encourage you to work on this assignment in pairs or groups. If you do so, you can just hand in one copy of the worksheet with all your names on it, and you will all get the same grade!

1b. Schreiben

- Übung D: for 1 & 2, you actually hear the conjunction in the dialogue; for 3-5, you need to decide which conjunction is logical based on the dialogue
- Übung F: for "Summe," write the total amount of the bill; for "Kleingeld" [=small change] write the amount of change Erika and her father receive
- Übung H: Only do Nos. 1-4. The audio track for no. 5 does not match the options provided, and there isn't one for no. 6. For 1-4, the idea is to listen for the item that's being looked for, and then choose the answer that includes a pronoun appropriate for that item.
We will give you your
first essay grade for Seite 43, Übung U. You should write 125-150 words.
- Just write about two people: yourself and a male or female friend.
- You need not write out all the sentences you're prompted to write on pp. 42-43, but write out a few that you can use in your essay. A good essay will put these sentences in some sort of order, and will also include one or two other things that you can say using the German you've learned so far.
- Try to avoid saying things you haven't learned the German for yet. In particular, please don't write your ideas out in English and then translate them into German: this is very hard work, and produces very poor results!
- Click
here for some additional hints and reminders for the first essay.
- Rules/Warnings:
- If you get someone who is proficient in German to proofread your essay, we will consider this cheating. We recognize that you
can learn from having someone look over your essay for you, but we have
to enforce this rule in order to make the grading fair for everyone. It IS OK for you to ask such a person (or an instructor in the German
Lab) 3 or 4 specific questions on how to say something.
- If you
use an online translator for significant parts of your essay, we
will consider this cheating. Note that online translators tend
to produce noticeably absurd translations. Consequently, even if your
instructor is not sure you are using an online translator, you are likely
to get a bad grade for your essay if you use one. You also risk becoming
a laughing stock in our department, like the student (this really happened!) who submitted an essay on "Ludwig Dienstwagen
Beethoven" ["Dienstwagen" is a possible translation of
"van," though it generally means "company car"...].

2b. Click here to download the "Lola rennt - Teil 3 Worksheet," fill it out as you watch the clip, and hand it in in class. [This section of the movie contains lots of useful/fun expressions and examples of modal verbs and the Imperative ==> this worksheet is a little longer than the others ==> the next Janosch worksheet will be a little shorter than usual!]

Allows you to do exercises (both written and spoken), and connects you with native speakers who critique what you've done. Also allows you to chat with people who speak the language you're trying to learn and who are trying to learn the language you speak.

questions if it gets boring and you've gotten the point.
- b. Remember to
use the answers in CP to correct all SAM exercises in a different
color.
1a. Schreiben
Sie SAM Seite 45-58 Übung C-I, K-P, R, S
- For Übung D, most of the items listed are actually appropriate. Thus for no. 2, for example, you would say "Ja, pack deine Handschuhe." For some items (Jacke, Turnschuhe), the answer is subjective, so it's up to you to decide if they would be appropriate or not.
- For Übung M, the intended answer is "Er muss jetzt langsam [=slowly] fahren."
1b. Schreiben
Sie SAM Seite 207-212 Zieltextdiktat & Übung A-C, G-I
- For Übung I, the answers to 1-9 should all be Accusative Prepositions, i.e. durch, für, gegen, ohne or um. The long answer questions are a bit difficult ==> please refer to the answer key if you get confused!
- OPTIONAL: Übung D, E & F. These dialogues are a bit confusing (the characters change their minds about various things they say, and it's a little difficult to find the intended answers, but these exercises are still good listening practice. After you check your answers, you may want to listen to the text(s) one more time (generally a good idea for all these listening texts!) We haven't been
assigning the exercises relating to Michael Kaluder's novel, so the context
may be unfamiliar. The discussion here is about how two characters
from the novel, Janus and his mother, should be portrayed in the film
[D], and how Janus should be dressed [E]]

1a. Begin learning the Kapitel 5 vocabulary by doing some or all of the following:
- Look through the "Wissenswerte Vokabeln" sections in Kapitel 5
- Read over the Kapitel 5 vocabulary a few times (V Seite 194-5)
- Use the online Flash Card Program to load the Kapitel 5 vocabulary and practice it for a while. We strongly recommend that for each card, you try to very quickly form a sentence with that word; use some English words if necessary to speed things up. Say (or whisper) your sentences out loud. If you can't come up with a sentence quickly, just move on to the next card.
1b. When you're ready, click here to take the Kapitel 5 Vokabelquiz.
- The goal of this assignment is just to motivate you to begin studying the chapter vocabulary, so the questions won't cover all of the chapter vocabulary. You need to a score of 80% or higher in order to get a "check." You may try the exercise repeatedly, and if you like you can submit your results more than once. If you submit a score below 80%, you will get a "check minus" for this assignment.
- You actually see 20 questions out of an item bank of 30 for this particular exercise. To see all 30 items, click here. Note that this version of the exercise is not "submittable"; it's just available for additional practice.

1a. Lesen Sie den Text "Vorspiel per SMS". Click here to download the text combined with vocabulary notes and a worksheet, which you should fill out and hand in. Please assume that all the questions begin with the disclaimer "according to the article": this article is filled with intentionally provocative gender stereotypes!
- We strongly encourage you to work on this assignment in pairs or groups. If you do so, you can just hand in one copy of the worksheet with all your names on it, and you will all get the same grade!
- Click here to see the original text online (you need to click on "weiter" at the bottom of the page to see the second half of the text).
- Read through the entire text once quickly without stopping (don't let this take longer than 5 minutes!), then read it through one more time and answer the questions as you go. You only need to understand the text well enough to answer the questions. Please resist the urge to look up every unknown word, but do look up any of the italicized words [vocabulary from Vorsprung Kapitel 1-5] that you don't recognize.
1b. Lesen Sie Janosch Seite 20-27. Click here to download a worksheet on the text, which you should fill out and hand in! Today's worksheet is very short, since you're also reading the SMS text.
- Please begin by reading the notes on pages 36-37 in your Coursepack.
- Then look over the pictures, and read the assigned pages once quickly without stopping.
- Then read the text one more time more carefully, and complete the worksheet.

Ein Trimm-Dich-Pfad (a fitness path) is a path, usually in a forest, where
one can walk or jog, and periodically there will
be stations by the side of the path where one can do various exercises (Übungen). They
can be quite long, which is why Anna and Katja took 2 1/2 hours to do
it, and it took Onkel Hannes and Tante Uschi 4 hours to complete it even though they didn't do all the exercises.
- Note for Übung G:
You hear the answer to the first question (welche Jahreszeit) at the end of the dialogue.
- OPTIONAL: Seite 220 Übung A. Listening to this is good practice, but choosing the appropriate pictures may be confusing.

1a. Lesen Sie den Absprungtext: "Integration und multikulturelles Leben" (V Seite 215-6) und schreiben Sie Aktivität 18 & 19 (Hand this in!)
- This is a difficult text and we do not expect you to understand it completely: you just need to be able to answer the questions in Aktivität 19.
- Please begin by reading through the "Ausländer" vocabulary (p. 235) and doing Aktivität 18. Then read the captions next to the pictures of the two foreign students being interviewed. Then read the text once quickly without stopping, and finally, read it one more time to answer the questions in Aktivität 19.
- Notes on Aktivität 19: The directions mean that the statements may be true for Constant, or Khalid, or for both of them, or for neither of them! For question 2, interpret "lebt schon länger in Deutschland" as meaning "lebt schon mehr als [=more than] 2 Jahre in Deutschland"! For question 9, "weniger ausländerfeindlich als die Leute in der Universitätsstadt" means "less hostile to foreigners than the people in the college town." In the text, "unter den Studenten" means "among the students."
- Here's a translation of the end of Khalid's interview [starting at "Aber außerhalb der FH..."]: But outside of the FH, everything [das Ganze] looks a bit different, especially after September 11 people sometimes look at me oddly in the street. But it's not too bad.
