Read over the text once quickly without stopping; focus on headings, images, cognate words [words that are similar to English] and other clues to meaning. Then read the text more slowly a second time. Try to be selective about what you look up in the dictionary. Use your common sense to make educated guesses, but do make sure you refer to the dictionary if you get confused or realize that the text can't be saying what you thought it was.
