Vienna 1900 A lecture in English by George Steiner on Vienna around 1900, the site of an intellectual flowering in music, language, philosophy, politics, economics, architecture and other arts. In this Vienna also, the seeds of anti-Semitism were sown, which influenced Adolf Hitler and led to the Holocaust.  (47 minutes)

Viennese for Americans - A Phrase Book A humorous page with a wide range of sample phrases in the Viennese dialect, ranging from "Wieso kinnt's ia Deppn net wia jeda nuamle mensch a emericen redn?" [="Why don't you [fools] just speak American like everybody else?"] to "Hoid da Goschn!" [="Shut the %#$#* up!"]. For each phrase, you are given the English equivalent [as opposed to a literal translation], the Viennese phrase, and a flippant transcription of how an American might pronounce the phrase.  Please be warned that some of the phrases on this page are likely to offend some people, possibly including yourself, for a variety of reasons!
