- If you are having trouble seeing the video, click here to download the newest version of Quicktime.
- A sure sign that you need a new version of Quicktime is if you are hearing audio but seeing a blank screen.
- If you're having problems but the installer/updater tells you you already have the newest version of Quicktime, try uninstalling Quicktime and then reinstalling it from the site; this may fix your problem.
- To download the video to your desktop, right-click on it and choose "Save Target As" [on a PC], or hold down the "ctrl" key while you click on it and choose "Save Link As" [on a Mac]. If you don't like Quicktime, this would allow you to try playing the video using some other players:
- It should play in iTunes. Click View > Actual Size if the screen looks tiny; move the mouse over the bottom of the video to see the controls (Play, Pause etc.)
- It should also play in the very versatile VLC Media Player. Click here for more info on the VLC Media Player, and download it if you like it.
- If you continue to have problems, please email Hartmut with a specific description of your problem (e.g. what error message you're getting, what browser & operating system you're using, what you tried to do to fix the problem, whether you've experienced a similar problem in other contexts, etc.)
1b. Bitte sehen Sie auch dieses geniale kurze Video über die Wechselpräpositionen [=2-way prepositions], das an einer High School in Minnesota gemacht wurde!
1c. When you're ready, click here to take the online Kapitel 7 "pre-quiz" and use the "Submit" button to submit your score to your instructor. You need to get a score of 80% or higher in order to get a "check." You may try the exercise repeatedly, and if you like you can submit your results more than once. If you submit a score below 80%, you will get a "check minus" for this assignment.
- If nothing happens when you click "submit," make sure you've enabled popups for this page
- You will be asked 20 questions. IF YOU GET A QUESTION WRONG, KEEP TRYING UNTIL YOU GET IT RIGHT. THE PROGRAM WILL ONLY CALCULATE YOUR SCORE IF YOU HAVE ANSWERED ALL THE QUESTIONS. Incorrect guesses will reduce your score.
- You actually see 20 questions out of an item bank of 42 for this particular exercise. To see all 42 items, click here. Note that this version of the exercise is not "submittable"; it's just available for additional practice.
2. To review the video lectures from German 101, click on the "Index of Video Lectures." To review the vocabulary from German 101, go to the online Flash Card Program and load the vocabulary for the chapters you want to review. We recommend spending ten minutes a day to review one chapter each day, and continuing this until you've reviewed all chapters sufficiently. Rather than just looking at the flash cards, we recommend that you try to quickly say a simple sentence with the vocabulary on each card before moving on to the next one. |

TEIL 2 |
1a. Begin learning the Kapitel 7 vocabulary by doing some or all of the following:
- Look through the "Wissenswerte Vokabeln" sections in Kapitel 7
- Read over the Kapitel 7 vocabulary a few times (V Seite 282-3)
- Use the online Flash Card Program to load the Kapitel 7 vocabulary and practice it for a while.
1b. When you're ready, follow the links below to take some short online quizzes related to the vocabulary for this chapter. These quizzes will also include a few words that are not on our vocab lists. The goal of this assignment is just to motivate you to begin studying the chapter vocabulary (and, we hope, to motivate some of you to play with this site some more on your own!), so the questions won't cover all of the chapter vocabulary. In order for you to demonstrate that you completed this assignment, we'd like you to do the following:
- Work on the first exercise and click on "Auswerten" [="Evaluate"] until you've successfully guessed all the words. Click "OK" on the score panel that comes up and proceed to the next step.
- Take a screenshot of your browser window showing that you've answered each item correctly. Click here for instructions on how to take a screenshot, and samples of what your screenshot could look like.
- Paste your screenshot into a blank Word document. [Click in the Word document and select Edit > Paste]
- Repeat this procedure for the remaining 4 exercises.
- Email this Word document to your instructor as an attachment. Please don't print it out: we don't want you to expend a lot of paper and toner on this assignment. If you have technical difficulties, just explain them to your instructor in class and s/he will try to help you. If you don't know your instructor's email address, send your email to Hartmut and let him know your instructor's name.
- Here are the links to the five exercises. Note that for most of the exercises, if you're not sure what the picture is supposed to represent, you can roll your mouse over the image and then a label for the picture will appear in English and French (!).
ALTERNATIVE TO 1b: We highly recommend the exercises from the above site, and this is the only time we will require you to do them in German 102. But if you hate them or find them pointless, then you can instead choose 15 words from the Kapitel 7 vocab list, write a sentence with each, and hand your sentences in in class. |

NOTES TO HELP YOU WITH THIS TEXT:
- Be sure to read Brennpunkt Kultur, Seite 304-5, which will help you understand the text!
- Jessie is trying to decide between three universities (in Passau, Jena & Berlin) and between two subjects (Betriebswirtschaft & Psychologie). She's chosen two of the universities based on their rankings, and one because she likes the city.
- Near the beginning of the paragraph about Passau, the "dafür" in "Dafür steht man an der Mensa lange an..." means something like "But on the other hand" [i.e. it does not have it's "literal" meaning "for that"].
- She seems to have a problem with men wearing pink shirts.
- The first paragraph about Jena tells us various things Jessie liked there; the second paragraph begins by telling us that she had little interest in the city before her trip, and came only because of the ranking ("Eigentlich hatte Jessie keine große Lust..."), then tells us some more things Jessie liked there.
- The section on Berlin is introduced by a short paragraph telling us some other things Jessie cares about. We then find out that Jessie may not mind the mediocre rankings of the Psychology dept. there, because she wants to be in Berlin ["Mag ja sein, dass...aber" = "It may be true that...but"] - but since many others think like her, she may have a hard time getting a spot there.
- Most of the last paragraph is actually not about Jessie's opinions about Berlin, but rather about what she learned from her trip: what she needs to pay attention to ("worauf ich achten muss"), and that the subject she chooses to study will not in itself determine her future ("Ein Studium ist keine Einbahnstraße," i.e. a course of study is not a one-way street leading to a predetermined goal).

Look for episodes in which she describes university life or interesting intercultural experiences. Blogs begin with the latest entries, so if you're interested in reading about her adjustment to life in Germany, you would want to go back to the archived entries for September 2006 [start at the bottom of the page] [the August 2006 entries still take place in Ann Arbor]. If you found reading this interesting, you may want to come back to it for future LLJs. Please try writing about it in German, but feel free to use English where you need to, since the blog is in English, and we don't want you to struggle with trying to translate things!

If you submit a score below 80%, you will get a "check minus" for this assignment.
- NOTE 1: Some of the items ask you to combine two sentences by noticing that they both refer to the same person, thing or idea. Usually, the second sentence will use a pronoun to refer to that person, thing or idea, and the relative pronoun will replace that pronoun. The correct relative pronoun will normally "rhyme" with the pronoun it replaces! Note also that the pronoun being replaced should not reappear in the relative clause, since the relative pronoun has replaced it.
- NOTE 2: Some of the items introduce you to the book Eine Woche voller Samstage, which we will begin reading soon. Although they should be self-explanatory, they may seem a little strange, so here's some background info:
- Ein Sams ist ein merkwürdiges Wesen [=is a strange creature]. Es ist klein und hat rote Haare auf dem Kopf und auf dem Rücken. Es hat keine Nase, sondern einen kurzen Rüssel [=a short "trunk," like an elephant has, which looks like a pig's snout on the cover illustration]. Es hat einen dicken, grünen Bauch. Es kann alles essen, und ihm schmeckt alles [=everything tastes good to it].

- Note: the title of this text is a bit of a play on words: "den guten Ton treffen" is an idiom for "behaving in an appropriately sophisticated manner," but here its literal meaning ("encounter a good tone") is also relevant, since the text describes Vienna's classical music scene.
- The text mentions "die deutsche Hymne" [i.e. the German national anthem], by Haydn, and "die europäische Hymne," by Beethoven [the "Freude schöner Götterfunken" chorus from his 9th symphony]. Click on the links if you'd like to hear these, and here for more info on the "Deutschlandlied"!

Mehr Ideen für LLJ 4:
- By now you've probably accumulated a lot of questions about the culture readings you've done online in German 101 and 102, and what you've read in the "Brennpunkt Kultur" boxes in Vorsprung - and probably also lots of other questions you'd like to ask a "real" German/Austrian/Swiss person. And there's surely someone from Germany, Austria or Switzerland whom you know from one of your classes, or from where you live or where you work, or whom you've met socially. So ask him/her if s/he'll let you interview him/her, and if s/he says yes, arrange a time, and figure out what you want to ask. Ask your questions auf Deutsch (switch to English when you need to), and perhaps also just make some conversation auf Deutsch for fun.
- Visit livemocha.com (perhaps combine this with the idea above!). This is a social networking site for people trying to learn languages. Allows you to do exercises (both written and spoken), and connects you with native speakers who critique what you've done. Also allows you to chat with people who speak the language you're trying to learn and who are trying to learn the language you speak.
- If you enjoyed Verliebt in Berlin, watch another episode via our CTools site!

out of reading this way, you can choose the dual
language version. From the original
link, you get a menu that also allows you to see the story with illustrations,
and allows you to take an online
quiz on the text. If you like this site, click here to see their web editions of lots of other Grimm fairy tales!

- Visit the "Step Into German" website to inform yourself about the "German" part of the German popular music scene. When you enter the site, select "skip intro" and then click on "Music Videos"; note that, below each video, you can also find a link to lyrics in German and translated lyrics in English.
- Explore the interview excerpts on the website "Germans and Americans Talk." The excerpts are taken from interviews the author conducted with native speakers of American English who had spent time in Germany, and conversely with native speakers of German who had spent time in the United States. Though they are some years old by now, they are still extremely interesting and relevant. In many cases, you can hear the original audio excerpt, and compare it to a German transcript and an English translation, so that this can also be great listening practice!
- If you enjoyed Verliebt in Berlin, watch another episode via our CTools site!
- Go to Kaffeestunde at the Max Kade Haus, or to the South Quad or Bursley Deutschtisch, or find some other way to have a longer conversation in German!
