Deutsch 102 Hausaufgaben--Winter 2012

Januar

Februar

März April

Here are the suggested assignments--but please be aware that your instructor may make changes to this in class!

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the class day FOLLOWING the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted. Please remember that late homework will receive a "check minus," and homework that is more than two class days late will not be accepted (unless, of course, you have a good excuse for handing it in late).  If you notice any mistakes, please email Hartmut or inform your instructor!

iLrn Assignments

For each chapter, the iLrn assignment is the biggest assignment. We have broken it down for you into a few exercises to do each day - but we are not requiring you to stick to this recommended schedule. Towards the end of each chapter (generally the day before the review sheet is due), the online homework schedule will say "Kapitel ___ iLrn assignments must be completed by the beginning of the next class." This is when your instructor will check that you have completed this assignment. This means that in theory, you could do the entire assignment for the chapter the night before it's due - but if you do that, you won't learn much from it. Success in this course correlates closely with doing the iLrn assignments thoughtfully, so please start early, even if you don't stick precisely to the recommended schedule!

For iLrn homework, you should start each assigned exercise, but you need not finish it if you think you've gotten the point and don't need more practice.  In general, if an assignment doesn't seem useful to you, talk to your instructor about whether you might be able to do something else instead that seems more worthwhile to you.

Please use your common sense when the program tells you your response was incorrect: there may sometimes be more than one correct answer, and sometimes the program may grade your answer as incorrect only because of a trivial spelling mistake; it's also possible that the program may make a mistake. For open-ended questions, the program initially gives you 0 points regardless of your answer, until your instructor reviews the activity. If in doubt about a wrong answer, please ask your instructor before assuming you made a mistake!

Tag 1: Mittwoch, 4. Januar

Assignments are listed on the day on which they are assigned. They are due at the beginning of class on the class day FOLLOWING the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted, i.e. what is listed here is due TOMORROW, not today. Think of this homework schedule as what your instructor would be writing on the board today in class, if s/he still wrote homework on the board

0a. Kaufen Sie die Bücher, die Sie noch nicht haben [=which you don't already have] [assuming you still have Vorsprung (V) and that your iLRN access to the accompanying online materials is still valid from German 101, this will just mean buying Eine Woche voller Samstage]

1c. When you're ready, click here to take the online Kapitel 7 "pre-quiz."

2. RECOMMENDED: To review the video lectures from German 101, click on the "Index of Video Lectures." To review the vocabulary from German 101, go to the online Flash Card Program and load the vocabulary for the chapters you want to review. We recommend spending ten minutes a day to review one chapter each day, and continuing this until you've reviewed all chapters sufficiently. Rather than just looking at the flash cards, we recommend that you try to quickly say a simple sentence with the vocabulary on each card before moving on to the next one.

Tag 2: Donnerstag, 5. Januar

Assignments are listed on the day on which they are assigned. They are due at the beginning of class on the class day FOLLOWING the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted, i.e. what is listed here is due ON MONDAY, not today. Think of this homework schedule as what your instructor would be writing on the board today in class, if s/he still wrote homework on the board

1a. Begin learning the Kapitel 7 vocabulary. Klicken Sie hier!

1b. When you're ready, take the quizzes on the Kapitel 7 Vokabeln. Klicken Sie hier!

ALTERNATIVE TO 1b: We highly recommend the exercises from the above site, and this is the only time we will require you to do them in German 102. But if you hate them or find them pointless, then you can instead choose 15 words from the Kapitel 7 vocab list, write a sentence with each, and hand your sentences in in class.

2a. Follow the instructions you received via CTools Announcements to register for your section of the iLrn course for German 102. If you no longer have the email, find it via the "Announcements" tab on CTools!

2b. Go to iLrn, click on the "Assignment Calendar" tab, choose "Kapitel 7" from the "Section" pulldown menu, and do: 7-7, V7-B, W7-B, W7-F (Click here for general info on iLrn assignments)

3. BLOG INVITES & TEST POSTS: You will receive an email from your instructor sometime in the next few days, inviting you to join your class blog (look for a subject line beginning "Sie wurden eingeladen..."). Please accept the invitation and post a "test post" in which you simply say what your favorite German word is. This is not an official homework assignment: we just want to make sure you can all post to the blog before the first blog assignment is due. There will be a CTools announcement today or tomorrow with more detailed information.

Tag 3: Montag, 9.

1. Lesen Sie auf dem Web über Case Overviews (Ignore info on the Genitive). You need not "submit" the diagnostic exercises electronically, but of course we encourage you to try them, as well as the practice exercises.

2. Complete this "Deutsch 102 Grundlagenwiederholung" [=review of fundamentals] worksheet!

3. Go to iLrn, click on the "Assignment Calendar" tab, choose "Kapitel 7" from the "Section" pulldown menu, and do: W7-C, W7-D (Click here for general info on iLrn assignments)

  • Note: For Übung D, you will write four sentences, each beginning "Die Straßenbahn fährt..." and ending respectively with the German equivalents of (1) behind the church (2) over the bridge (3) under the bridge (4) in front of the railway station. Note that in each case you will use the Accusative, since the statements describe changes in the tram's location. There will be a related exercise on Test 7, but the prompts will be designed so that you will sometimes need the Dative and sometimes the Accusative.
  • RECOMMENDED (i.e. NOT required!): W7-E (great practice of 2-way prepositions, and a cute story). We'd require it, but don't want to assign too much homework.
Tag 4: Dienstag, 10. Januar

1. Go to iLrn, click on the "Assignment Calendar" tab, choose "Kapitel 7" from the "Section" pulldown menu, and do: 7-14 (you will need to refer to the map on p. 253. Note: der Marktplatz ("Marktpl." on the map) ist vor dem Rathaus, near the bottom of the map), W7-K (click on "Enlarge map" to see the map properly. You can ignore the little numbers on the map: all the places you're asked about are written out on the map (e.g. names of squares like "Jesuitenplatz"),W7-O (Click here for general info on iLrn assignments)

MORGEN SIND WIR IM COMPUTERKLASSENZIMMER!

Tag 5: Mittwoch, 11. Januar

HEUTE SIND WIR IM COMPUTERKLASSENZIMMER!

1. Post to your class blog on the Kapitel 7 Kultur-Texte. Click here for instructions and to access the articles. Please remember to include your name and the assignment name as tags!

2a. Sehen Sie die ersten 25 Minuten des Films Bella Martha [=Mostly Martha]. Go to the CTools site for this course, click on the "Library-DVR" tab, and then click on the movie.

  • Troubleshooting summary: A. If you don't have CTools access, contact your instructor; B. If, after waiting for a little while you see a list of movies, but they won't play: download Quicktime, or contact bluestream-help@umich.edu for more arcane trouble-shooting help; C. If you never get a list of movies, email bluestream-help@umich.edu so a BlueStream account will be created for you for this course. D. Unfortunately, the Bluestream system is incompatible with Linux.

2b. Click here to download the "Bella Martha Worksheet," fill it out as you watch the clip, and hand it in in class.

2c. If you enjoy the movie, watch all of it and write about it for your first AMD!

3. OPTIONAL: Watch the "Kapitel 7 Videos zum Spaß"

Tag 6: Donnerstag, 12. Januar

1. BITTE DRUCKEN SIE DEN TEXT "GIB'S AUF!" UND BRINGEN SIE IHN MORGEN!

  • Sie brauchen den Text noch nicht zu lesen!

2. AMD 1: Click here for instructions. Please remember to include your name and the assignment name as tags!

Tag 7: Dienstag, 17. Januar

1. Lesen Sie "Gib's auf!" und schreiben Sie Antworten auf die "Nach dem Lesen" Fragen. Some of the questions are speculative, so go ahead and speculate You should hand this in in class tomorrow, but it's OK if you have to write "Ich weiß nicht" for one or two of the questions, or if you want to answer the last question in English.

  • OPTIONAL: Watch this prize-winning student video adaptation of "Gib's auf!" - which begins with a reading of the story, complete with English subtitles. Bear in mind that of course this is just one way to imagine the story. Note in this context that Kafka vigorously resisted his publisher's suggestions that The Metamorphosis should be published with a picture on its cover of the "bug" into which Gregor Samsa finds himself transformed when he wakes up at the beginning of the story. Kafka thought this would limit the reader's freedom to imagine the story (including, for example, changes in Gregor's appearance in the course of the story).

2. Go to iLrn, click on the "Assignment Calendar" tab, choose "Kapitel 7" from the "Section" pulldown menu, and do: 7-17 (ignore the "Record and Chat" part!), L7-A, L7-D (Click here for general info on iLrn assignments)

Tag 8: Mittwoch, 18. Januar

  • If you've been following the recommended schedule, what you have left to do is: W7-H, W7-J, W7-L, L7-E, L7-F
  • ALSO RECOMMENDED (i.e. NOT required!):L7-H [This is very practical (listening to directions), but you may find the directions confusing. Be sure to enlarge the map. The routes that you hear described are drawn in on the map, so you can just listen to each description and follow along on the map, and ignore the task in the exercise.]
  • HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Click on the "Video Library" tab, ignore the first video, and watch the two short interviews: Wohin gehen Sie gern? and Was kann man hier alles machen?
Tag 9: Donnerstag, 19. Januar

1. Lernen Sie für den Test: Test 7 Wiederholungsblatt. In case you did not get the review sheet in class, click here to download it. Please email Hartmut if this review sheet (or link) is not up-to-date!

  • Please show your instructor your completed Wiederholungsblatt in class. If you've attempted most of the sections, you will get a "check"; if you've done everything and drafted the essay, you will get a "check plus." Your instructor will determine the grade in class by taking a very quick look while you're discussing your responses in pairs, so that you can keep the sheet and continue studying with it.
Tag 10: Montag, 23. Januar

1. Keine Hausaufgabe Lernen Sie für Test 7! IDEEN:

  • Go to iLrn, click on the "Self-tests" tab, and take "Post-Test 7."
  • Sehen Sie noch einmal [=watch one more time] das Kapitel 7 Video!

  • Note: the title of this text is a bit of a play on words: "den guten Ton treffen" is an idiom for "behaving in an appropriately sophisticated manner," but here its literal meaning ("encounter a good tone") is also relevant, since the text describes Vienna's classical music scene.

  • RECOMMENDED (i.e. NOT required!): L10-A (Another classic Grimm's fairy tale, and great narrative past practice: a father send out his seven sons to fetch water for their newborn sister's emergency baptism. In their enthusiasm to get the water, they drop the pitcher in the spring, and when they don't return, the father, thinking they forgot his request, wishes they would turn into ravens for their thoughtlessness. Because it's a fairy tale, his curse becomes reality. When the little girl grows up and the townspeople tell her about her brothers' fate, she sets out to find and save them...), L10-B (Fun, and great narrative past practice, but very long: it turns out that the witch (Hexe) in Hänsel & Gretel was not evil at all, but just a nice, lonely, eccentric old lady with an odd obsession with her vegetable garden and making salads, and a roof repaired by using gingerbread), L10-C (Some interesting info about Liechtenstein)

2. AMD 5. Pick an activity (visit your class blog for ideas!), do it, then post about what you did. Click here for some additional ideas. Please remember to include your name and the assignment name as tags!

If you've attempted most of the sections, you will get a "check"; if you've done everything and drafted the essay, you will get a "check plus." Your instructor will determine the grade in class by taking a very quick look while you're discussing your responses in pairs, so that you can keep the sheet and continue studying with it.
  • Click here for the dual-language version of Dornröschen [=Sleeping Beauty] referred to in the instructions for Section E. Even if you know the story, reading through both the German and English versions will be great review for the test! 1. Kapitel 11 iLrn assignments must be completed by the beginning of the next class! ==> Go to iLrn, click on the "Assignment Calendar" tab, choose "Kapitel 11" from the "Section" pulldown menu, and do all remaining assigned exercises. (Click here for general info on iLrn assignments)

  • If you've been following the recommended schedule, all you have left to do is: L11-D This is a very interesting text about life in the former DDR, using lots of vocabulary and structures we've learned in German 101 & 102. It will be hard to understand just by listening to it ==> please click here for a transcript of the text with extensive annotations (more annotations than you should need, to make sure it will be easy for you to follow along!).
  • HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Click on the "Video Library" tab, ignore the first video, and watch the short interviews: Was halten Sie von der Wiedervereinigung? and Gibt es noch große Unterschiede zwischen Ost und West?
  • ALSO RECOMMENDED (i.e. NOT required!): 11-32 [more practice re: German geography], W11-I [Good practice of present and past Subjunctive. Note that you can write consequences in the Present or the Past Subjunctive: e.g. if I had slept in my German class (past Subjunctive premise), I wouldn't be able to speak German now (Present Subjunctive consequence) OR I wouldn't have met my current boyfriend/girlfriend (Past Subjunctive consequence)], W11-L [Past Subjunctive practice],W11-Q [Passive practice], W11-R [crossword puzzle: fun, and good vocab practice. Click here for some more info about how the iLrn crosswords work], W11-S [challenging reading practice], L11-F [Subjunctive practice. Each item consists of a statement followed by a question. The question always assumes that the activity mentioned in the statement really happened. In order to decide if the dialogue is logical, you need to listen for whether the initial statement is in the indicative (in which case it really happened and so the question makes sense) or in the subjunctive (in which case it did not happen and so the question doesn't make sense)], L11-I [Dialogue about a trip to Stuttgart including lots of Genitive prepositions]

2. Start reviewing for the final exam! For example, you could get an early start on the review sheet (see the Tag 51 assignment!), or you could click here to review all of the video lectures from German 102, and perhaps also some of the German 101 video lectures.
