Here are the suggested assignments--but please be aware that your instructor may make changes to this in class!

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the class day FOLLOWING the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted. Please remember that late homework will receive a "check minus," and homework that is more than two class days late will not be accepted (unless, of course, you have a good excuse for handing it in late).  If you notice any mistakes, please email Hartmut or inform your instructor!

iLrn Assignments

For each chapter, the iLrn assignment is the biggest assignment. We have broken it down for you into a few exercises to do each day - but we are not requiring you to stick to this recommended schedule. Towards the end of each chapter (generally the day before the review sheet is due), the online homework schedule will say "Kapitel ___ iLrn assignments must be completed by the beginning of the next class." This is when your instructor will check that you have completed this assignment. This means that in theory, you could do the entire assignment for the chapter the night before it's due - but if you do that, you won't learn much from it. Success in this course correlates closely with doing the iLrn assignments thoughtfully, so please start early, even if you don't stick precisely to the recommended schedule!

For iLrn homework, you should start each assigned exercise, but you need not finish it if you think you've gotten the point and don't need more practice.  In general, if an assignment doesn't seem useful to you, talk to your instructor about whether you might be able to do something else instead that seems more worthwhile to you.

Please use your common sense when the program tells you your response was incorrect: there may sometimes be more than one correct answer, and sometimes the program may grade your answer as incorrect only because of a trivial spelling mistake; it's also possible that the program may make a mistake. For open-ended questions, the program initially gives you 0 points regardless of your answer, until your instructor reviews the activity. If in doubt about a wrong answer, please ask your instructor before assuming you made a mistake!

2. RECOMMENDED: To review the video lectures from German 101, click on the "Index of Video Lectures." To review the vocabulary from German 101, go to the online Flash Card Program and load the vocabulary for the chapters you want to review. We recommend spending ten minutes a day to review one chapter each day, and continuing this until you've reviewed all chapters sufficiently. Rather than just looking at the flash cards, we recommend that you try to quickly say a simple sentence with the vocabulary on each card before moving on to the next one.

ALTERNATIVE TO 1b: We highly recommend the exercises from the above site, and this is the only time we will require you to do them in German 102. But if you hate them or find them pointless, then you can instead choose 15 words from the Kapitel 7 vocab list, write a sentence with each, and hand your sentences in in class.

2a. Follow the instructions you received via CTools Announcements to register for your section of the iLrn course for German 102. If you no longer have the email, find it via the "Announcements" tab on CTools!

3. BLOG INVITES & TEST POSTS: You will receive an email from your instructor sometime in the next few days, inviting you to join your class blog (look for a subject line beginning "Sie wurden eingeladen..."). Please accept the invitation and post a "test post" in which you simply say what your favorite German word is. This is not an official homework assignment: we just want to make sure you can all post to the blog before the first blog assignment is due. There will be a CTools announcement today or tomorrow with more detailed information.

  • Note: For Übung D, you will write four sentences, each beginning "Die Straßenbahn fährt..." and ending respectively with the German equivalents of (1) behind the church (2) over the bridge (3) under the bridge (4) in front of the railway station. Note that in each case you will use the Accusative, since the statements describe changes in the tram's location. There will be a related exercise on Test 7, but the prompts will be designed so that you will sometimes need the Dative and sometimes the Accusative.
  • RECOMMENDED (i.e. NOT required!): W7-E (great practice of 2-way prepositions, and a cute story). We'd require it, but don't want to assign too much homework.

1. Lesen Sie "Gib's auf!" und schreiben Sie Antworten auf die "Nach dem Lesen" Fragen. Some of the questions are speculative, so go ahead and speculate You should hand this in in class tomorrow, but it's OK if you have to write "Ich weiß nicht" for one or two of the questions, or if you want to answer the last question in English.

  • OPTIONAL: Watch this prize-winning student video adaptation of "Gib's auf!" - which begins with a reading of the story, complete with English subtitles. Bear in mind that of course this is just one way to imagine the story. Note in this context that Kafka vigorously resisted his publisher's suggestions that The Metamorphosis should be published with a picture on its cover of the "bug" into which Gregor Samsa finds himself transformed when he wakes up at the beginning of the story. Kafka thought this would limit the reader's freedom to imagine the story (including, for example, changes in Gregor's appearance in the course of the story).
