Deutsch 231 Hausaufgaben--Winter 2008

Januar

Februar

März April

Assignments are due on the class day following the day on which they are listed on this schedule, unless otherwise noted.  Please remember that late homework will receive a "check minus," and homework that is more than two class days late will not be accepted (unless, of course, you have a good excuse for handing it in late). If you notice any mistakes, please email Hartmut or inform your instructor!

Flexible Homework

If some types of assignments don't seem useful to you, talk to your instructor about whether you might be able to do something else instead that seems more worthwhile to you.

Important note on working on assignments in pairs or groups

We strongly encourage you to consider working on assignments in groups of 2, 3 or even 4 students.  You will learn a lot more by discussing the assignment with each other and helping each other figure out difficult parts.  ==> If you do this, you can hand in one assignment with the names of everyone in your group on it, and you will then all get the same grade for it. This is not appropriate for all assignments ==> if you'd like to try it, please consult with your instructor beforehand and get his/her approval! [For some assignments, the homework schedule already tells you that you can do this ]

Language Learning Journals

These are due every other Monday. We suggest that you plan ahead to find a day when you have time for the LLJ, rather than leaving it to the last minute.
Tag 1: Donnerstag, 3. Januar 1.

2. "Grammatik-Zusammenfassungen" auf dem Web:
a. Lesen Sie den "Basic Verb Review
b. Füllen Sie das "Arbeitsblatt: Verb-Wiederholung" aus (CP 2)

  • You may work on this assignment in groups of 2, 3 or even 4 students.  You will learn a lot by discussing it with each other and helping each other deal with difficulties.  ==> If you do this, you can hand in one Arbeitsblatt with the names of everyone in your group on it, and you will then all get the same grade for it.
  • In case you don't want to tear the page out of your coursepack, the Arbeitsblatt is also available as a downloadable document on the CTools site for 221/231, under "Resources."

3. Für Donnerstag, den 10. Januar: Sehen Sie den Film Nach fünf im Urwald. [Der Film ist 99 Minuten lang.] Go to the CTools site for this course, click on "Resources," go to the "Filme/Videos" folder and then click on the movie. You must be using a computer on campus for this to work. Click here for detailed instructions.

NÄCHSTES MAL SIND WIR IM LRC!

Tag 2: Montag, 7. Januar

1. "Grammatik-Zusammenfassungen" auf dem Web:
a. Lesen Sie und machen Sie die "Practice Exercises" über Wortstellung und Konjunktionen [You need not submit the "Practice Exercises," but items from them may appear on tests and quizzes.]
b. Machen Sie die "Diagnostic Exercises" auf der "Wortstellung" Seite. [You must "submit" your work electronically in order to get credit for this assignment.  You need to get a score of 80% or higher in order to get a "check."  You may try the exercise repeatedly, and if you like you can submit your results more than once.  If you submit a score below 80%, you will get a "check minus" for this assignment.]

  • Since this is the first "electronic" assignment of the term, you may run into some difficulties, and we want this to help you work more efficiently, not to frustrate you ==> if you have trouble submitting these exercises, try to figure out how to make a "screen shot" of the page showing your score and send it as an attachment to your instructor [alternatively, you could write down your responses to the first ten items]; if you have trouble getting to the exercises at all, just describe the problem to your instructor when you come to class.

2. VOLUNTARY PRESENTATIONS ON GERMAN MUSIC:

  • If there's a German band you like and you would be willing to give a short presentation on it in class tomorrow, please let your instructor know.
  • If you volunteer, your instructor will give you a sheet outlining what you should do: basically, you would
    • play two minutes of the song and
    • talk about it for three minutes, including creating a simple activity that draws the class's attention to the use of verb forms and/or conjunctions in the song.
  • This would count as your LLJ 1.
Tag 3: Dienstag, 8. Januar

1. Arbeitsblatt: Wörterbuchübung (CP 8-9)

2. OPTIONAL: You can download the Verb Review transparencies covered today and on the first day of class, write out your responses and hand them in to your instructor to grade. They are available via the CTools site: go to "Resources" and then to the folder "Folien"; click on "VerbTenseReviewFolie.doc." Students enter this course with different levels of preparation ==> if you're not feeling confident with the verb forms, this is a chance for you to get some additional practice.

3. OPTIONAL: If you haven't done so yet, try using the online German Flash Card Program to study the Gateway Vocabulary list. Just go to Options > Add Cards > Load Pre-Made Cards, click on "German 221/231 Gateway Vocab" and select the categories you want to practice. Note that if you take a minute to read the Help menu, you may discover lots of additional useful features!

Tag 4: Mittwoch, 9. Januar

1. Sehen Sie den Film Nach fünf im Urwald. [Der Film ist 99 Minuten lang.] Go to the CTools site for this course, click on "Resources," go to the "Filme/Videos" folder and then click on the movie. You must be using a computer on campus for this to work. Click here for detailed instructions. Note that class will begin with a mini-quiz on what happens in the movie.

2. Für Mittwoch, den 16. Januar: Aufsatz 1 (250 Wörter). THEMA: Klicken Sie hier.

  • **Please come to class tomorrow with an idea for what webpage(s) you want to write about! We will give you ten minutes to start on your essay in class.**
Tag 5: Donnerstag, 10. Januar

1. "Grammatik-Zusammenfassungen" auf dem Web:
a. Lesen Sie und machen Sie die "Practice Exercises" über "Case Review".  [You need not submit the "Practice Exercises," but items from them may appear on tests and quizzes.]
b. Machen Sie die "Diagnostic Exercises" auf der "Case Review" Seite.

  • A note on this exercise: Some of the questions will ask you something like "Why is the noun X in the following sentence...?" This is an odd-sounding question, and will probably only make sense to you if you take a look at the summary of the German case system offered in Case Overview II: Why is the Noun in the Sentence, so please take a good look at that page if those questions give you some trouble. The point of this is to clarify something that confuses many students, namely the relationship between what you learned about case in relation to verbs (i.e. information about subjects and direct and indirect objects) and what you learned about case in relation to prepositions (i.e. information about accusative, dative, two-way and genitive prepositions).
2. Lernen Sie die Formen in den Tabellen in CP Seite 13.

3. Lesen Sie "Some Hints on How to Guess Gender" in CP Seite 12.

Tag 6: Montag, 14. Januar

1. Lernen Sie für Quiz 1 (Popmusik; Nach fünf im Urwald; Verben; Konjunktionen; Case Review)

  • Normally we will NOT give you detailed info on what kinds of questions will be asked on the quizzes: they will simply cover the indicated material. But for this quiz, you can click here to see all the quiz question formats. In some cases, you'll notice that you can prepare your exact answer at home (i.e. questions 5, 6 & 7)
  • Verbs for questions 1-4 will be taken from the Gateway Vocab List

2. Bring Aufsatz 1 draft (250 Wörter). THEMA: Klicken Sie hier.

Tag 7: Dienstag, 15. Januar

1. Aufsatz 1 (250 Wörter). THEMA: Klicken Sie hier. If you need an extra day to incorporate all the comments you get on your essay during today's peer review, you can hand this essay in one day late :)

Tag 8: Mittwoch, 16. Januar

1. "Grammatik-Zusammenfassungen" auf dem Web:
a. Lesen Sie und machen Sie die "Practice Exercises" über "Prepositions", "Strong Verb/Weak Verb Pairs (stehen/stellen etc.)" und "Prepositional Verbs and Adjectives".  [You need not submit the "Practice Exercises," but items from them may appear on tests and quizzes.]
b. Machen Sie die "Diagnostic Exercises" auf der "Prepositions" Seite.

NÄCHSTES MAL SIND WIR IM LRC!

Tag 23: Donnerstag, 14. Februar

Gehen Sie zur School of Music Library.

2. Für Donnerstag, den 21. Februar: Sehen Sie den Film Kebab Connection. [Der Film ist 96 Minuten lang.] Go to the CTools site for this course, click on "Resources," go to the "Filme/Videos" folder and then click on the movie. You must be using a computer on campus for this to work. Click here for detailed instructions.

Click here to see a picture of a Döner Kebab; click here for an article in English with more information about the central role of Döner Kebab in Germany's fast food world. The following explanations will help you understand two little jokes that are made in the movie, and are both useful things to know about when you're in Germany:

  • The German word "scharf" means both "hot" as in "spicy hot," and "sharp" as in a sharp blade. This will be relevant in the first few minutes of the movie.
  • In the second half of the movie, the lady in the Greek restaurant tries to compliment Ibo by comparing him to Julius Caesar and Dieter Bohlen, whom she appears to admire equally. Dieter Bohlen became famous as part of Modern Talking, Germany's non-answer to the Backstreet Boys.  Modern Talking was Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders, two untalented, tanned one-hit wonders from the 80s who came out with a remix of their little song 20 years later and subsequently feuded and broke up. They have become cult figures of popular obsession and disgust. Dieter Bohlen, better known than the other guy and a favorite topic of German tabloids, plays the role of "Simon" on "Deutschland sucht den Superstar," the German version of "American Idol," i.e. he's the mean-spirited #$%@& who entertains the nation by his vicious putdowns of the contestants.

3. LLJ 3. IDEEN:

  • Sehen Sie den Film Nikolaikirche (Go to the CTools site for this course, click on "Resources," go to the "Filme/Videos" folder, then to the "Movies on Reserve for LLJs etc."  folder, and then click on the movie). This is a good movie, but not everyone necessarily finds it very entertaining. We highly recommend it because it shows you:
    • How the peaceful demonstrations that led to the overthrow of the DDR regime came about
    • The courage it took to participate in, let alone organize such protests
    • How amazing it was when these demonstrations kept growing, and eventually succeeded

If you watch it with this in mind, you may find this to be a very inspiring movie!

  • Sehen Sie den Film Das Leben der anderen [=The Lives of Others] (Go to the CTools site for this course, click on "Resources," go to the "Filme/Videos" folder, then to the "Movies on Reserve for LLJs etc."  folder, and then click on the movie). This film, which won the 2006 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, focuses on the pervasive observation of the lives of private citizens by the Stasi in the DDR.
  • Sehen Sie den Film Die Legende von Paul und Paula oder den Film Solo Sunny. [Sie können diese Filme bei CTools finden: CTools > Resources > Filme/Videos > Additional Movies for LLJs etc.]. These were two of the most successful movies made in the DDR. They're excellent movies, and they will give you a much better sense of what everyday life in the DDR was like than the movies we are watching in this course, which were made after reunification, and often from a "Western" perspective.
  • Informieren Sie sich mehr über die DDR!
Tag 24: Montag, 18. Februar

2. Vergleichen Sie sich mit einem Pinguin [=compare yourself to a penguin].  Schreiben Sie 8 Sätze.  Ideen:

Tag 38: Mittwoch, 19. März 1. Rehearse a 1-minute excerpt from your final video project to perform in class tomorrow. You MUST know your lines, i.e. you should not be reading them. The scene can be very short, so you won't have a lot of memorizing to do, and you should feel free to improvise during the role play if you can't remember a line - and be prepared to prompt your partners if they're having trouble! If you notice a couple of words you keep forgetting, scribble them on your hand This is meant to be fun, and to encourage you to record the video in the same way, i.e. rehearse each scene before you record it, and then perform your lines from memory and improvise as needed or when you have a good idea, rather than mechanically following a script. The video project should be a fun way to practice "real" speaking, and is not about perfectionism! In this respect, please also don't worry about technical "glitches" when you're editing. It's only important that it's possible to clearly follow the plot and hear the dialogue!
