"abhängen von" is often used with a da-compound + a question word or "ob" [=whether]
"Abhängen von" is only for describing causal relationships. For "to depend on" in the sense of "rely on," you need to use "sich verlassen auf."

Das Volumen eines Gases hängt von dem Druck und der Temperatur ab.	The volume of a gas depends on the pressure and the temperature.
Wird das Universum ewig expandieren? Das hängt davon ab, wieviel Masse das Universum hat.	Will the universe expand forever? That depends on how much mass the universe has.
Welches Öl braucht das Auto? Das hängt davon ab, wie kalt es ist.	What kind of oil does the car need? That depends on how cold it is.
