ALS

1. As a subordinating conjunction (==> verb at end of clause), als means when. (Recall the distinction between als, wenn, and wann, all of which can mean when: als is for particular events in the past; wenn is for particular events in the present and future, and for repeated events; wann is only for questions and indirect questions.)

Als Einstein plötzlich hungrig wurde, kaufte er SPAM.
When Einstein suddenly became hungry, he bought some SPAM.
2. After a comparative, als means than.
SPAM ist weicher als Schinken.
SPAM is softer than ham.
Note that if two things are found to be alike in a comparison, wie is used, not als:
SPAM schmeckt so gut wie Schinken.
SPAM tastes as good as ham.
3. Als can also be used to introduce specific information, as in the examples below. In this case it is translated as as; occasionally, it is not translated at all:
Bakterien und Algen dienen dem Menschen als Lebensmittel.
Bacteria and algae serve as food for man.

In unserem Sonnensystem erwartet uns wahrscheinlich kein blühendes Paradies als neue Heimatstätte der Menschheit...
In our solar system, there is probably no blossoming paradise awaiting us as a new homestead for humanity...

Es hat sich als wahr erwiesen, daß SPAM gut riecht.
It has proved to be true that SPAM smells good.

4. Be prepared for exceptions, e.g.

nichts als: nothing but

Ich esse nichts als SPAM. I eat nothing but SPAM.
um so...als: the more...because
SPAM schmeckt um so besser, als er mit Schmalz gemacht wird.
SPAM tastes all the better, as [because] it is made with lard.
als (ob): as if
Es ist als ob das Radium ewig weiter strahlen könnte/ als könnte das Radium ewig weiterstrahlen.
It is as if the radium could continue radiating forever.
WÄHREND

1. The subordinating conjunction während means while. It comes at the beginning of the clause, and the conjugated verb is at the end:

Während die Besatzung nach der richtigen Angabe ihrer Uhren also etwa 11 Jahre unterwegs war, sind für die auf der Erde zurückgebliebene Menschheit inzwischen nach deren ebenso richtig gehenden Uhren etwas mehr als 1000 Jahre vergangen. [Verb at end of während-clause ==> while]
While the crew has thus, according to the correct readings of their clocks, been travelling for roughly 11 years, 1000 years have meanwhile passed for the people who have stayed behind, according to their equally accurate clocks.
2. The preposition während means during.
Könnte die Besatzung während ihrer Reise auf dem Zielstern Einzelheiten beobachten, so ... [Verb not at end ==> during]
If the crew could observe details on the target star during its trip, then...

Während ihrer sehr schnellen Annäherung an den Zielstern würde ihr die Geschichte des Zielsterns im letzten Jahrtausend zeitrafferartig abrollen. [Verb not at end ==> during]
During its [the crew’s] very fast approach to the target star, the history of the target star in the last millennium would unroll for it [the crew] as in a quickmotion film.

1. When indicating location, bei means near, or (e.g. with reference to someone’s home, or a place of employment) at:

Eine 10 Millionen Jahre alte Dose SPAM wurde bei Kroger gefunden.
A 10 million-year-old can of SPAM was found near Kroger.

Darwins Ururururenkel arbeitet bei diesem Kroger.
Darwin’s great-great-great-great-grandson works at this Kroger.

2. With reference to temperature or pressure etc., bei means at:
...Raketen, ...deren Treibstoffverbrauch bei etwa 4 kg/secton liegen wird.
...rockets whose fuel consumption will lie at roughly 4 kg/ton-second.
3. Very often in scientific writing, bei means in the case of, during, at, or in the process of:
Bei solchen Raumfahrten kommen die Gesetze der speziellen Relativität zur Auswirkung.
In the case of/During such space travels, the laws of special relativity come into play.

Beim Start...

Wenn bei einer Art das Nervenzentrum besonders groß wird...

SO

1. So can mean in this manner:

Machen wir es so!
Let’s do it like this/in this manner.
2. After a conditional clause (especially if it omits wenn), so can mean then:
Ißt du SPAM, so wirst du lange leben.
If you eat SPAM, (then) you will live a long life.
3. So can mean so as in "so much" (for so in comparisons, see item 2 under als above!):
SPAM schmeckt so gut!
SPAM tastes so good!
******Otherwise, so is not equivalent to English so!****** It is usually better to use also instead (see below):
Felix Wankel wollte einen ruhigeren Verbrennungsmotor, also erfand er den Wankelmotor.
Felix Wankel wanted a quieter internal combustion engine, so he invented the rotary engine.

Wankel hatte mit den Nazis kooperiert, also hatte er nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg zunächst Forschungsverbot.
Wankel had cooperated with the Nazis, so he was initially forbidden to do research after the second world war.
