  • About

Calder Fong hails from Seattle, where he spent his formative years living on a hill facing Gas Works Park. His interest in the material remains of industry thus grew out of encounters with Richard Haag's repurposed coal and oil gasification plant, and with the Pacific Northwest's abundance of obsolete steam, electric, logging, and mining technology.

Before joining the German Studies Department at the University of Michigan in 2012, Calder studied Industrial Archaeology at the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology for three semesters, two of which were part of a Fulbright Fellowship. Prior to this he received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in 2010 with a major in German Studies and a minor in chemistry. His intended area of research concerns Germany‚Äôs transformation of its industrial heritage into performance venues, tourist attractions, and settings to be explored through literary and visual arts.
