Undergraduate Studies in German

Message from the Chair Welcome to the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, home to U-M's German Studies, Dutch and Flemish Studies, and Scandinavian Studies Programs!

Our language courses are wide-ranging, challenging, and fun! Fuller descriptions of each language program are available in the corresponding section links on the far left.

Minors are available in German or Scandinavian Studies, and German is an option in the Global Engineering Program. The undergraduate major in German takes advantage of our outstanding faculty, who hold degrees in a wide range of fields, and have won numerous awards for research and teaching. One of the largest German programs in the country both in numbers of majors and minors and the size of our faculty, we are able to offer courses not only in German language and literature, but also in

  • Business German
  • Scientific German
  • German history
  • Film
  • Politics
  • Music, and much more!

For a full list of our undergraduate courses, see the LSA Course Guide here: www.lsa.umich.edu/cg.

FYI: The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts recognized the excellence of our undergraduate courses by making Germanic Languages and Literatures the first humanities department, and the first smaller department, to win the much-coveted Award for the Greatest Contribution to Undergraduate Education.

Whatever your interest, I hope that you will enjoy reading about our many dynamic and innovative programs.

Julia Hell, Chair

Undergraduate Advising If you would like to do so, you may schedule an appointment with one of our German concentration advisors, Kalli or Andrew.

Waitlist Policy From the first day of registration until the last business day before the first day of classes, a member of the GLL staff will monitor enrollments and note any waitlisted courses that have spaces available. When available, a member of the GLL staff will issue an override for each open space in a waitlisted course in the order of the waitlist. The overrides issued will have an expiration date of 48 hours (including weekends). If the student does not accept the override within that time frame, it will expire. This will allow the staff member to offer the space to the next eligible student on the waitlist, who will then have 48 hours to enroll. If all students on a given waitlist have been given an opportunity to enroll, but do not do so, a member of the GLL staff will ask the Registrar’s Office to drop them from said waitlist. This will allow the class to reopen for registration. Once classes begin, no overrides will be issued for closed courses without the consent of the instructor for the course. S/he has final authority on whether or not to issue overrides.
