Portraits of Marine Algae: an historical perspective

Species Focus:
Padina glabra

This species of subtropical brown algae, originally described from the west coast of Africa, was recently reported to occur on the coast of Texas. (Wynne 2008a) and was added to the checklist of benthic marine algae for the marine flora of Texas (Wynne 2008b).  Earlier, it was found on the east coast of Florida (Wynne & De Clerck 1999). A total of nine species in the genus Padina are now recognized in the checklist of marine algae for the tropical and subtropical flora of the western Atlantic (Wynne 2005). The University of Michigan Herbarium has very rich collections of marine algae for this region.
